Newport end of March

My daughter goes to Salve Regina. I will be staying at the Mariott. She really does not know Newport. I want to spend a weekend with her but she doesn%26#39;t want to just visit mansions, maybe one would be ok. What else is there to do? thanks

Just walking down Thames Street is a fun adventure, lots of stores. There are a lot of historic sites to explore, a ride around Breton Point is always fun. Old cemetarys to explore. Play the slots at NPT Jai Alai. The list is loooooooooong.

the mansions are quite beautiful, not to be missed. depending on when you are going the cliff walk is nice also. i second the thames street shopping. there are some great staores and great little eateries.

If it%26#39;s good walking weather I%26#39;d recommend a walk along the Cliff Walk (your daughter%26#39;s backyard!) or further out, past Second Beach is Sachuest Point. Also good for a trek is the Norman Bird Sanctuary, where you can hike (not far) to the famous Hanging Rock. If the weather is not so ammenable to outside activities, the Jane Pickens movie theatre (right downtown in Washington Square) is one of the last single screen theaters around. Don%26#39;t miss a drive around the Ocean Drive/Breton Point, very dramatic ocean views and on Sundays there is kite-flying.

The Newport Blues Cafe ( on Thames ) is a place all ages can enjoy the music . A ride over to Jamestown for dinner or lunch might be good . How about a tour of the Newport Winery ? There are also train rides up the river .
