Short break suggestions for a weekend AWAY from Rhode Island

We need to get out of town (Providence) for a short break. Usually, we go to New Haven or New York, Newport, or Boston. We%26#39;re looking for something a little different that is within a 3 hour drive from Providence. We know there%26#39;s a lot in MA, NH, CT and even RI -- but we%26#39;re pretty new to the area and so we don%26#39;t quite know what%26#39;s available. We%26#39;re a couple with an elementary-school aged child and we like nature, hiking, museums, historic districts, and all that good stuff. Any suggestions?

Yes, for spring. But suggestions for other seasons would be welcome too.

Did you know that NH has a coastline? With lots of beautiful beaches? Odiorne Point is wonderful for checking out tide pools, counting lighthouses, biking or walking. Also if you have time check out the White Mtns and Kangamangus Highway...not sure about the spelling.
