Family-friendly seafood restaurants in the area

My family is flying to Newport, RI this weekend for a wedding and we%26#39;re looking for a good (local) seafood restaurant that is kid-friendly and possibly on/near the water. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Scales and Shells. Excellent sea food, casual atmosphere. On Themes Street. In town.

If you will have a rental car, consider making the trip out to Evelyn%26#39;s in Tiverton (about 25 minutes).

Are either of these places on/near the water? Do you know if they happen to take reservations? We%26#39;re traveling with our 14 month old son and we will have traveled quite a bit that day, car %26amp; plane. Not sure if he%26#39;ll be able to handle the wait.

Scales and Shells is great food, but is not on the water. The service can be slow when crowded, so it depends on how old the children are and how long they can sit still. I don%26#39;t think they have a kid%26#39;s menu, so it could be pricey for children--check first. They also don%26#39;t take credit cards--bring lots of cash.

Flo%26#39;s out on the east end of First (Easton%26#39;s) Beach about a mile from downtown is a classic fried seafood clam shack, like Evelyn%26#39;s in Tiverton but closer. They have outdoor seating and it is a good place for kids; you just have to like fried seafood.

Most of the downtown restaurants offer seafood on the menu. Some are better than others. The Mooring is really good, and right on the water, but may not be a place for your children depending on their ages, thoughI think they have a children%26#39;s menu--call to find out. They have a lot of outdoor seating as well.

Oh my Evelyn%26#39;s has the best calamari I have ever had! Yummy!

We%26#39;re staying in North Kingstown eventhough the wedding/reception is in the Newport area. We have quite a bit of family and it was hard to find rooms close together. Does anyone know anything about Duffy%26#39;s or Seaport Tavern/Tavern By The Sea?

Flo%26#39;s....across the street from the beach. You order downstairs and then can sit upstairs overlooking the water. Clamshack kind of place/very kid friendly and in Newport. Be sure to try the clamcakes and chowder. Tiverton is much too far away to go to Evelyn%26#39;s anyway they had a fire last year and I%26#39;m not sure they are reopen yet.

Have a great time....weather looks to be about 81 and partly sunny on Friday.

Also, if staying in North Kingstown, Duffy%26#39;s is very good. Not near the water, though. They do offer a variety of fried and baked seafood and would be very kid friendly as well. There is a wonderful homemade ice cream shop not too far from there, Daily Scoop?? Just ask they%26#39;ll know where to send you.

Check out Wilson Park in NK for the kids. Great playground with covered picnic area and a donut shop around the corner.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. We%26#39;re looking forward to our trip to the Newport area.

I agree that Evelyn%26#39;s is great - and a long drive from where you are staying. For the record - they are open.

Duffy%26#39;s in N Kingstown is not on the water - but it is very family-friendly, casual, not expensive and has more than fried food. The stuffed quahogs and chowder and clamcakes are fabulous - enough to make me regret my recent shellfish allergy.

Have a great weekend.
