Money%26#39;s tight, so we%26#39;re (gram, aunts, and tween nieces %26amp; nephews) going to do the Cliff Walk, see the Breakers and just one more mansion. I%26#39;ve been before but I am still having a hard time deciding between Marble House and the Elms. The mansion website gives me a general idea, but any details you provide might help me refresh my memory better. Can anyone please let me know what you think and why? Also, can the kids go swimming at Bailey%26#39;s beach? And, what%26#39;s the best stretch of the Cliff Walk to take considering having someone in the group a tad older than the rest of us? Does anyone have a suggestion for an agenda? Thanks for your help!
Marble House or Elms?
Marble House is much flashier; the Elms is more livable (for a mansion). Since you%26#39;re seeing the Breakers anyway, which is pretty flashy, I%26#39;d go with the Elms. Beautiful grounds to stroll, too. It%26#39;s my favorite mansion.
The Cliff Walk is all pretty walkable now. There%26#39;s a easy stretch from Memorial Boulevard to 40 Steps that%26#39;%26#39;s either 1 or 1/2 mile (sorry, don%26#39;t remember which). Or you could start at 40 Steps (Narragansett Ave) and park there and head to the left, toward the beach and Memorial Blvd and see how far you get.
Don%26#39;t know about Bailey%26#39;s Beach, though.

From what I remember the Marble House is nicer, but the grounds of the Elms are great. Go stand under the tent of weeping beaches across the lawn. THey%26#39;re amazing.
Yes, I shoudn%26#39;t tell you this but the side of Bailey%26#39;s where the Cliff Walk ends is public, called Reject Beach, and is beautiful when there isn%26#39;t a lot of seaweed in the water. Good waves, great sand. You can take the trolley back from there.
The furniture in the Elms is not original to the house, it was all auctioned off in the 60s. The furniture to Marble House is all authentic to the house. The yard isnt as spectacular though.
If you%26#39;re not buying the Breakers and other house ticket though...I suggest the Behind the Scenes tour at the Elms. It is my favourite tour. (Its $15 pp and is a nice compliment to the other tours that Pres. Society offers.)
I enjoyed Elms more then Marble House. Make sure to listen to some of the extra stories that tell about the people that lived there-that added a lot of the enjoyment for me.
Both were worth going to so you should enjoy either.
Thanks for your responses! You%26#39;ve set my wheels turning. Can the outside grounds of the Elms be viewed without a ticket? Please keep your comments coming regarding which mansion you like better as we%26#39;ll be going to Newport later this week.
