first time in Newport -- stay 2 or 3 nights?

Hi. We live in Boston, have never been to Newport, and would love to visit in early May. We want to see the mansions (thinking of buying the pass for 5 mansions) and do the Cliff Walk. Currently, we are thinking of taking a Friday off; leaving Boston early in the morning, arriving in Newport around noon, checking in (have not picked at b%26amp;b yet, looking for something under $200 per night), and doing the Cliff Walk. The following day, we would like to do the mansions (possibly, spilling into Sunday, unless the 5-mansion ticket is only good for 1 day). Do you think this will be enough time to get a taste of Newport or should we add a Thursday to our plan and stay 3 nights?

Seeing as you%26#39;re from Boston, and can always get back easily, I%26#39;d say that the 3 Day 2Night trip is a good first taste. Save your vacation day for another trip later in the Summer....

At that time of year you should have no problem finding under $200/night lodging.

milemarker: thank you. That%26#39;s what we are leaning towards. Do you have any suggestions for a place that is central? We looked at Atwater Villa, but it has 15 rooms (a bit too many for me, I prefer smaller inns), and does not have a full breakfast. We are in our late 20s, don%26#39;t mind walking (but would prefer to be not too far from the restaurants, shopping, etc.).

Haven%26#39;t really been to too many of the B%26amp;B%26#39;s, but was in this one for a post wedding reception get together (They rented out the whole place for their relatives, so it%26#39;s not like it%26#39;s a rowdy place )

It%26#39;s in a greaet location, walking distance to most everything, but includes parking which, in the first part of May, helps because parking meters and lots are starting to charge...

When we were married a couple of years ago, we had our out of town guests that wanted B%26amp;B%26#39;s use: www.gonewport.com

They%26#39;re a free reservation service that knows about all of the B%26amp;B%26#39;s and what they%26#39;re like...since we live in town, we pass by them all the time, but never really get a chance to use or see many of them, so their experience helped alot of our guests...

hope that helps...

ooops, sorry, that second website should be:

to gonewport sight is useful too, but not the site I was talking about...

thanks very much

Try the Admiral Fitzroy Inn. It is downtown, within walking distance of the waterfront scene, very personable, and with a full breakfast. It is, however, about 15-20 rooms, so may be larger than you want.

LocalObserver: thanks very much. We decided to go with Attwater Villa. It is larger than the places we normally stay at, and there is no full breakfast , but the rate is good (in early may, $155 per night for the master suite), and the innkeepers have responded very promptly to all my questions. The only weird thing (which I found out after I submitted the reservation request) is this: I inquired about the possibility of providing soy milk, because I am lactose intolerant, and was told that I can bring my own soy milk, if I want it... a bit surprising, to say the least... normally innkeepers are more than willing to accommodate...I am a bit put off.
