One Day Visit to Newport

I will be traveling to Rhode Island the second week of February. My travels will put me in and around Providence,RI I would like to drive down to Newport and spend an afternoon. Is the drive from the Airport to Newport fairly straightforward ? During time in Newport is it advisable to drive around for the sights or just walk aroung? Also any suggestions on Seafood Resturants would be helpful.

One Day Visit to Newport

YEs, the drive from PVD to Newport is pretty straight forward....95 South to the Route 4 exit (Left hand lane exit) Follow Route 4 to Route 138 East....138 takes you onto Newport...about 30 - 35 minutes.

If you have the time, you could do the 10 mile Drive to see some of the remote sights of Newport, and give you an overview of the city and give you an idea of where you want to spend your time walking around...

or if it%26#39;s warmer out, the Cliff walk

At this time of year, you can find parking downtown and walk to things around town, shops and such.

Not sure if you%26#39;re looking for Lunch or Dinner

For Seafood:

The Mooring = www.mooringrestaurant.com

Scales and Shells = www.scalesandshells.com (Open at 5:00)

Black Pearl = www.blackpearlrestaurant.com (Good Chowder)

Various Other restaurants will have nice fish dishes as well....but these are ';fish heavy';

One Day Visit to Newport

For seafood restaurants I highly recommend Scales %26amp; Shells. You can walk around downtown - the shops, etc. But for the mansions, Tennis Hall Of Fame, Ocean Drive, etc. you%26#39;ll need a car. Plus it%26#39;s cold this time of year!

Thank you kindly for your replies. I have printed a map out of the Newport area, and will do the 10 mile drive. I will be staying at the Marriott. I%26#39;ll need to catch an early breakfast and be on my way by 7:00 am. Is there a good resturant near by that you can reccomend as well? Thanks in advance

Are you staying at the Mariott in Providence or Newport ?

If it%26#39;s the one in Providence, I%26#39;d just head down to Newport and grab Breakfast down there....a lot less ';hectic'; than the city and there%26#39;s not much near the Mariott in Providence unless you go into Downtown.

If you%26#39;re staying at the Mariott in Newport, there%26#39;s the Corner Cafe on Broadway, or right on Thames Street, Benjamin%26#39;s Poor Richards, or the Frranklin Spa up the hill on the Corner of Spring St. and Franklin St. also Ocean Breeze at the lower end of Thames.
