Whale watching tours

We will be in RI and Maine(around Acadia N.P.) for a week (each place) in July. Which place would be better to take a whale watching cruise?

Whale watching tours

How is this for a quick reply....As far as I know there aren%26#39;t any whale watching tours in RI, but if there are they would certainly be out of Gallilee.

Whale watching tours

That WAS quick, xia33!! Thanks for the info.!

Yes, there are whale watching tours out of Galilee, which is in the Point Judith area of Narragansett.

Thanks, ILoveRI ! I will check that out.

The Frances Fleet (www.francesfleet.com) runs whale watching out of Galilee but their deep sea fishing is usually a better choice. Unless the whale pods are migrating fairly close to the coast the boats can%26#39;t get out far enough to find them. You might have better luck in Maine. Or you might want to research migration patterns and where the whales actually feed in July.

Thanks RIresident. We are probably going to go fishing, too, so I will keep that name handy. We went fishing off the coast of Oregon a few years ago and had a great time!

Just another FYI, most of the whale watching in our area I%26#39;ve heard about is out of the Cape. Hyannis or Provincetown, maybe Martha%26#39;s Vinyard too. There is a fast ferry from RI to the Vinyard. Great fishing off Block Island though.

Go to Plymouth MA for a day!

First of all, why miss Plimoth Plantation and the Mayflower II? No matter what historic sites you%26#39;ve seen, this one is very cool. Actors play the roles of the everyday residents (including Indians) and stay completely in character. It is fascinating and doesn%26#39;t really take that long to do the village and then the ship. Maybe a half-day. This is better than any other historic recreation you%26#39;ve seen before.

We do all of our whale watching from Plymouth- I believe the company we use if Captain Jack%26#39;s. The staff is knowledgeable; I think we%26#39;ve done this 3 times and we have always been able to come very close to the whales. All depends on where they are in their migration cycle. I think the tour takes 3-4 hours. It would be a long day, to do the whales, then Plimoth in one day, but I believe it can be done.

One interesting Tripadvisor question (or perhaps you can google this) is: southern RI, actually faces Long Island Sound- see how long it would take to get out to the whale grounds from there. From Plymouth, I think it%26#39;s about an hour. (By the way, Plymouth itself is an easy hour or so from Providence.)

While I agree with CSTraveler that Plymouth is a nice day trip and that whale watching is better off the Cape, Plymouth area or Maine I have to disagree with the remarks about Long Island Sound.

I%26#39;m sorry, but Rhode Island faces open ocean not Long Island Sound. Block Island is in open ocean not LIS. Narragansett Bay juts deeply into the state and some areas like Wickford, Warwick, Bristol and the like are on the bay. One of the reasons Narragansett has the premier surfing beaches in New England is that it is ocean facing at the mouth of the bay which produces some wicked cross currents equalling great waves. None of our beaches consistantly have the waves of California but we have fresh ocean waves on our beaches as opposed to the CT beaches that actually face Long Island Sound.

Sorry. What I meant was southern RI faces south on open water, not east; I was thinking the ride out to the whale grounds is necessarily longer.

I now realize LI and the sound are technically south of CT. Good lesson.

At any rate, a good google will probably provide projections on how long it would take from points in RI versus Plymouth.

The place we use in Plymouth is captjohn.com.
