Suggestions on things to do in the area

We will be in Narragansett for close to a week next July. I am looking for suggestions on things to do in the area.

We are interested in anything to do with the water and scenery, neat shops, and other must sees.

I appreciate any suggestions!!

Suggestions on things to do in the area

If you%26#39;re there July 4th week. I suggest you try the boats that go out at night to see the Newport fireworks. The boats are the same ones that do fishing charters out of Galilee. We went on the Francis Fleet.

Dress warm,( jeans and sweatshirts) bring some snacks, chairs and a small cooler pack. You will have front row ,close up view of the Newport fireworks. On the way over to Newport they point out some coastal sights. They also have fishing charters and whale watches. Nearby the charter boats, you can buy fresh caught lobsters from local fisherman, right off their boats in the afternoon. If you%26#39;re not there July 4th week but want a tour of local waters, try the ';Southland';.

You can also try Kayaking. There is even kayaking on full moon nights.Check the local bulletin call South County This Week which is available at msot supermarkets for free.

They will have a weekly event calendar of things to do and advertisements for sailboat charters and kayaking.

Try visiting Wickford Village, about 20 minutes North of Narragansett. It is a very quaint marina village with lots of little shops and boutiques. The Narragansett Pier area has some shops and restaurants.

Newport is also a great place to visit. Try the sailing tour of the bay aboard the ';Sightsailer';. It leaves from Bowen%26#39;s Wharf. I think they have a web site. You wil find lots more shops and restaurants in Newport. Don%26#39;t forget the mansions, if you haven%26#39;t seen them yet, they are unbelievable.

Have kids? Take them to Adventrueland one night. Bumper boats, minigolf, batting cages and then ice cream for dessert. Or walk them down to the tidal pools along Black Point. From Scarborough beach walk North along the shore past the stone ruins building. Wear your sneakers, it%26#39;s rocky.

The beaches are the main attraction in Narragansett. If your close to the beach, walk down at night and walk along the boardwalk, especially nice if it%26#39;s a full moon.

Have a great vacation. I%26#39;ll be there this July as well! Wishing us great weather.

Suggestions on things to do in the area

There will certainly be plenty to do in the area.

Beaches are the obvious attraction but not the only one. Try to catch the trolly tour of the Pier area for the inside scoop on the history and architecture. The ultra rich vacationed at those little cottages in Newport; the merely rich roughed it in cozier cottages in Narragansett. After the tour try to have lunch at the historic Towers for a stunning view and (usually) wonderful and reasonably priced food that benefits the Tower Preservation fund. South County Museum is right in town as are two historic preservation trust farms. The fishing village of Gallelie is part of Narragansett. The third largest commercial fleet in the Northwest sets sail every day as well as the Block Island ferries and charters. Catch a Southland Cruise for a different view of the area. Dining options are great, ranging from streetside clam shacks to full European style white cloth table service. Ask the locals what to avoid.

Newport is always a destination although it will be extremely crowded that week. Beaches, Cliff Walk, mansions, museums, Turo Synagogue, shopping etc. are well detailed on the Newport boards.

As mentioned, Wickford is a delightful place to visit for the cute shops and pretty harbor.

Block Island is a short ferry trip for a nice outdoor day trip. They have nice beaches, two light houses to visit, nature areas and minimal commercial areas. Pack a lunch, plan on renting a bike or moped, and don%26#39;t forget the sun screen.

Ninegret Park, Burlingame and other preservation areas (just south of Narragansett) have hiking trails and bird watching. Beavertail Light is beautiful.

If it rains a quick trip down to Mystic or to the casinos gets you inside. The RISD museums in Providence are also great. Candlepin bowling is a hoot even if the snob in you cringes at the thought of rental shoes.

Book lodging early. Traditionally there is some type of youth sports festival at URI (8 miles away) and rooms go fast.

Visit www.southcountyri.com for other ideas and event information.

Wow, thanks both of you for all the great suggestions!!! I don%26#39;t think we will probably be there over the 4th, but the cruise to watch the fireworks sounds fun. I love fireworks! (Maybe we will have to adjust our dates)

I see lots of things in your suggestions that sound fantastic, so I really appreciate the help.

Many thanks!

Kathy

You can also drive a little further south and venture into Charlestown and Westerly. Charlestown has a neat little set of shops called ';The Fantastic Umbrella Factory';, and Westerly, one of the larger towns in South (Washington) County has many offerings -- Misquamicut Beach (the beach itself, waterslides, arcades, mini-golfing, dining), live theater (Shakespeare in the Park, Granite Theatre), duckboat tours of the town and river (see Westerly/Pawcatuck Chamber of Commerce site), and more. Very doable drive of about a half-hour or less from Narragansett to Westerly.

Thanks for the suggestions, ILoveRI !! They%26#39;ll go on our list!

They%26#39;ve covered everything but food--a definate is Aunt Carrie%26#39;s for clam cakes and chowder. For a full meal, we prefer Champlin%26#39;s--fresh off the boat--flounder, clams, lobster--casual and not pricey.

Sounds delicious! Seafood is my favorite, and casual, but not pricey fits into our budget and style perfectly!

Forgot to say ';Thanks';, Technical-Rose!

BTW, my first name is Rose. :-)
