planning a trip to new port this summer

We are planning on the first part of July July 9 or 10 arrival,

We love history and nature and would like some time to do a little shopping. How may days to you suggest is 3- 4 days enough or to much?

We are looking for suggetions of things to do?

We also would like a clean / reasonabably priced room $150 or under near Newport.

We need a sea food place tha also serves other dishes. I due to medical condition I can not eat sea food but friend loves it. Some place casual would be good.

Thanks

This is the busy time and I assume rooms in downtown will be at a premium. This being a sea town, there are plent of fish resturants all over the harbor. There are so many fine places it is difficult to reccomend one at this time, it depends on where you stay.

There is never a lock of things to do in Newport. Just pick up a local weekly paper or look in the Newport Daily News for postings of what to do. If you%26#39;ve never been to the mansions, I%26#39;d reccomend the Breakers as this is the largest and most famous of the tour. Gateway Bus center on the northern part of down town, on Americs Cup Ave, can give you a guided bus tour of the mansions and the island

The town of Middletown is a great home base to use for Newport. You%26#39;ll get better priced hotels, and it is 5 minutes to Newport from most locations in Middletown. Use the Middletown location on Trip Advisor to get hotel names.

If you love nature and history, you picked a great place! For the nature part, you must walk the Cliff Walk, and take a drive around Ocean Drive, maybe have a picnic at Brenton Point State Park. Sachuest Point and/or the Norman Bird Sanctuary are beautiful too, lots of bird-watching, trails, they both have small musuems to explain the local flora and fauna. They are both in Middletown, but if you look at a map of Aquidneck Island, you%26#39;ll see that it%26#39;s a relatively small area you%26#39;d be covering. For history, I don%26#39;t even know where to start. There%26#39;s tons to do in Newport historically. I agree with the last poster about the Breaker%26#39;s, out of all the mansions, it%26#39;s the most elaborate.

While in Middletown, I would suggest Anthony%26#39;s Seafood restaurant, it%26#39;s very casual but very fresh seafood, and great prices. Not a ton of atmosphere, it%26#39;s not down on the water, but awesome clamboils, lobster, fried clams, etc. They don%26#39;t offer a lot of non-seafood dinners though, other than burgers and buffalo chicken. If you%26#39;re looking for something more Newport-on-the-water with a bigger menu, I would suggest the West Deck, my favorite restaurant. It%26#39;s casual, but fan-tas-tic food, it%26#39;s not inexpensive, but I think for what you get it%26#39;s very reasonable for Newport, the service is always great, everything I%26#39;ve had there has always been wonderful.

For shopping, just walk the length of Thames St, from Long Wharf to lower Thames, everything you could possibly want to buy is along that one mile stretch--all of the wharfs are along the same stretch too.

I think you%26#39;ll love Newport and Aquidneck Island, you%26#39;ll find plenty to do. 3 days will fly, but you can always come back!

Ditto Sachuest Point, Bird Sanctuary, state parks in Jamestown, and the Redwood Library if you really like history. If you like US history you will truly appreciate Npt.

In summer maybe try Bay Willows Motel or Las Palmas B%26amp;B although I%26#39;m not sure how good they are. There is a Motel 6 at the Npt/Middletown line, any of the rooms, especially those in the back are not bad at all, considering how exp. everything else.

The least expensive option:book Motel 6 early . Come in the middle of the week, if you can (cheaper stay, less people), use a cab to get to Newport, sometimes it may not be available though- too busy

Remember, however, driving in Newport could be a problem: one way narrow street entangled together with too much traffic as some people just come for the day; parking sometimes not available and expensive, some streets only residential parking sticker required,

Newport is best for walking, it is very pleasant; and,if you%26#39;d like a couple of drinks late at night it may cost you a lot!!! to drive back to Middletown, they have plenty of police cars.

So, you may save a bundle on a hotel outside of Newport, but it will take all the fun away from your vacation. That explains, why families bite the bullet and pay a lot to be in downtown: daddy can go for a beautiful jog in the morning, mom can take kids to the pool or to feed the seagulls, fly a kite on Brenton Point (you need to drive there), the car will be parked for an additional fee at the hotel for a piece of mind and convinience. You have plenty of simple meals on the go, or fancy dinner choices, hotels may provide babysitting with advance notice. In the middle of the week try Priceline, ask for 4 star hotel in Newport, they offer sometimes very limited number of rooms just to say in the ads, that they can get you for 150, when regular prices 350$, but I would not bet on it.

BTW, I agree Anthony has good food, but it is a fish store with few tables, it is useful, when you hungry and drive by towards Newport vineyard for vine tasting or Polo match on Saturdays, but I won%26#39;t recommend the place as a destination.

Rainy Day 1: take a trolley tour of Newport, visit a mansion, dine at 22 Bowens or Black Pearl (both expensive), go for a night cap and /or dancing

Sunny hot day: Go to the beach very early with the picnic basket, take a boat for a harbor cruise or go to the movies in the afternoon, go shopping on Thames (a lot of walking) in the evening, have dinner at Mama Louisa%26#39;s or Bouchard%26#39;s -expensive, worth it

Sunny pleasant day: Take a Cliff Walk to the end, put on comfy shoes, sun block, hats, take a sandwich, plenty of water, cell phone to call a cab as you may be tired to walk all the way back and your camera for beautiful pictures, you may spend all day there, there are benches once in a while, or you can seat on the rocks and watch the waves. Take a swim at Poor Man%26#39;s Baileys beach, which neighbours the upscale and private , you guessed it : Baileys beach! Eat at the wateredge of the West Deck-exp, Black Pearl%26#39;s open air bistro, 22 Bowen%26#39;s outside bar fare or Vincent%26#39;s on the Pier, outside; or inside Marriott%26#39;s Fathoms - great view, if seated by the windows.Later listen to the music at the Blues Cafe.

Rainy day2/sunny day: visit Green Animals Topiary garden and Toy Museum, you need to drive there 20 min, taste/buy wine at Newport Vinyards, check Chaves garden store across from them;

or drive to Saconnett Vineyards at Little Compton through Tiverton%26#39;s 4 corners, pretty drive for an hour for another vine tasting and Rhode Islands best ice-cream ( at Grey%26#39;s in Tiverton) Have dinner at Brick Alley if you can get in: great food, wine and value!! Place is where locals go!

And I did not even mentioned golf, sailing, International Polo matches, and that you coming, I beleive, during Tennis week (Campbells championship) at International Hall of Fame in Newport. And I would go for a ghost tour at the Belcourt Castle in the evening, the only private mansion opened to the public in Newport, and one must see the Marble house( read book ';Alva';) and the Elms, and Classic Music Festival in many Mansions and even on the boat , sunset cruises, old fashioned game of baseball on Tuesdays-local team, the Gulls. I can go on and on... I love Newport!

Do a lot of reading, watch ';Great Catsby'; again, it will help you to get to know and love Newport, check links

Thanks for all of your great advice!!!! We decided to stay at a Comfort Inn in Newport and save $ on parking or taxi fare! I can not wait to get to Newport!!!

Comfort Inn is a great choice. The beach is right across the street. Flo%26#39;s for fried clams is a must, or what every sea food you enjoy. Alantic Grill for the best breakfast on the island is right around the corner. Alantic Beach Club across the street has excellent portioned $10 early bird dinner specials Monday-Thursday. The walk to down town NPT is about 1 1/2 miles.

Agreed, good choice....another good thing is that the Summer Trolley will be running and it runs right down Memorial Blvd (right next to the hotel) right to Downtown. Could be an option for you.

I stay at the Travelodge in Middletown...it%26#39;s quiet and clean and on the bus line...a short hop downtown and I don%26#39;t have to worry about parking.

There is also the Jane Pickens theater...it%26#39;s a lovely place...as well as the White Horse Tavern...the oldest continuously operating tavern in the country. The food is very good.

Thanks for the tip on Anthony%26#39;s...I%26#39;ll be trying it when I go back end of April.

Just walking around Newport is lovely. Enjoy your trip.

oh my! clams at flo%26#39;s....slurrrrrrp!!!

Has anyone attended the annual Mardi Gras Ball held in Cranston RI. What can you tell me about it? Where did you stay?

    mardi gras in RI

The lovely Edgewood Manor Bed and Breakfast is 3/4 of a mile from where they have Mardi Gras every year and they are usually sold out with Mardi Gras revelers each year. Sorry for the late response. But maybe this will help for next year!

In desperate need of update. Sub-par service.

I have stayed there a few times..the place is very nice and great location...they do have an agreement with a club to use their pool ...I don%26#39;t know what price your buying it for or when your time is butI would not pay a lot as you can buy re-sales a lot cheaper...how much time is left on the contract is it a 1 or 2 bedroom all this means a lot if you ban it for a trade elsewhere

    Newport Onshore Resort

    Hi,

We are interested in purchasing a timeshare privately from someone and have a possible deal. I%26#39;m new to this but i think I have the basics down. I called the resort to ask some general questions.

However they don%26#39;t recommend private deals ( they make no $ on them) so our conversation was short but useful. I was informed that people now purchase points instead of weeks. Red time being the best points of course. I had not intended to join RCI as we don%26#39;t want to trade for several more years.

Has anyone reading this purchased a timeshare through a private party at this resort? Were there any problems? Any advice?

It looks quite nice from the pictures; are they accurate?

What about the management, i.e. helpful, competent?

    Thanks in advance.

    Newport Onshore Resort

There are many very helpful resources on the web about buying a timeshare; I am responding to your questions about the Resort. BTW, one of those resources is the RE Department at gonewport.com.

The Long Wharf Resort is a great place. It is quite clean and the rooms are comfortable. The Housekeeping staff is terrific...a tip on arrival goes a very long way. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need but I did have to ask our Housekeeper for a lobster pot...it arrived within 5 minutes. The only complaint we had was that it was difficult to find a baggage cart because many people seem to hoard them in their rooms the night before checkout. That%26#39;s not the fault, obviously, of the facility.

There are some real doosies at the front desk, though. Mostly kids. If you call again, make sure you ask for Rachel. She%26#39;s smart and communicative. Bear in mind that the staff is trained to encourage all transactions to go through the Resort and RCI so don%26#39;t be put off by their apparent reluctance to give you the inside tips.

The Resort is in a great location but you have to walk a while to get to the downtown hubbub. We don%26#39;t mind that at all. A brisk walk after dinner is AOK. There is ample parking on the premises.

If you have any specific questions...ask away!

I have no connection whatsoever with the Resort and am not in the travel business.

    Newport Onshore Resort

I would not buy a timeshare from Fairfield resorts. The management people are terrible. I have a timeshare with them and I am trying to get rid of it.

I don%26#39;t see any problem with buying a timeshare from a private party..the reason they don%26#39;t advise it is because they want a commission...what week are you buying? I do know their maintenance fees o yearly upkeep fees are very high and I personally don%26#39;t think that it is worth it...also how much time is left on the contract....??? As far as points go STAY AWAY...they are a big problem..have read so many complaints on them...what I would do is give a down payment and when the title has been changed to your names then give the rest...I have bought many reales and have never had a problem from both private and through www.holidaygroup.com ask for Wendy Knudson

  • Newport with children

We are visiting NYC at the start of April and considering driving up into New England and stopping off at Newport. I%26#39;d like to stay in a smart and atmospheric B%26amp;B or small hotel. However, everything that I%26#39;ve seen so far doesn%26#39;t take children! My kids, especially the 6 and 10 year olds would just love to stay in a place like Francis Malbone. Does anyone know of anything of this standard (even if it doesn%26#39;t have the same price tag!!) that could accommodate us? Also any other suggestions of other places to stay / things to do without traveling far too north / west. They are the sort of kids who would revel in anything that smacks of High Society / Great Gatsby etc so I guess we%26#39;ll be making friends with the Newport Preservation Society!

    Newport with children

I grew up in Newport and have kids of my own and have to say, the Marriot is a great place for kids to stay. They have a swimming pool and the elevator has glass windows in it and you can ';see'; where you are going. Maybe it%26#39;s just my kids, but that was a highlight for them. (especially in the middle of winter when the beaches aren%26#39;t open.

    Best of luck!

    Newport with children

Just remembered something, my kids LOVED this. Before you come into Newport, stop at the Mystic Seaport. It is a wonderful day activity for the kids. They even have an aquarime there as well. But the old sailing village is so quant and lots of stuff for the kids to do. It is exit 90, I believe, off of Interstate 95. (In Connecticut) Newport is exit 3A (route 138) so it is pretty close to Newport, maybe 40-50 minutes.

Here is the link for you. Feel free to email me with any questions you might have. Living in PA now, I am traveling to New England often. Hope you have a great trip.

    www.mysticseaport.org/index.cfm…

Many thanks for your suggestions - I will follow through.

Had thought about Mystic Seaport but not sure if we will make it. We want to take the kids to Plymouth because we have a holiday home just outside the original Plymouth in the UK and it will be fun for them to stand on the Mayflower Steps this side of the Pond and then to see where it landed your side! We%26#39;ve heard good reports of the Plymouth Plantation. We also thought we%26#39;d see Louisa May Alcott%26#39;s home but it may be too far of a trek. And what about Sturbridge(?). Again this sounded fun. Newport and the houses that will be open out of season is a must. Talking of which, what should we expect weatherwise? We had (for us) the most fantastic sunny weather in Princeton and Washington DC at the same time last year. Not expecting to sunbathe - but then we are use to British weather - but some blue skies and no gloves and rainwear would be a real boon!

I have to plan an itinerary and work out what is feasible without spending too long in a car. I guess we%26#39;re looking at three, one or two night stopovers. Any suggestions as to routes - what looks straightforward on a map isn%26#39;t always the case in real life! And I don%26#39;t suppose you or anyone else knows how long it might take to drive from Princeton to the southern reaches of New England. It%26#39;s the getting around NYC that I am not sure about.

All advice and ideas much appreciated.

After many visits to Newport, I cannot recommend a better place to stay with kids than the Fairlfield Long Wharf Resort (NOT the Inn on Long Wharf!). Its units have kitchens and there are nightly movies, a play room and a small indoor swimming pool that has a slide that the kids love. It%26#39;s in a great location, too, altho Thames Street is a few minutes troll away.

The Marriott is, indeed, a nice hotel but no kitchen or amusement programs.

Princeton is about 60 minutes south of NYC. From NYC, just less than 4 hours to Providence (about the same to cut across, mid-state, to Newport.). Traffic can be bad leaving NYC during rush hour, especially on Friday evenings. (We all just try to avoid 4-7pm.) But, in general, coming from NJ, you take the ';NJ Turnpike'; north to the the George Washington Bridge (great views of the Hudson and city) and it swings you straight onto route 95 north, which is the easiest way to go. In Rhode Island, Rte 138 East will get you from Rt 95 to Newport.

Please check Plimoth.org for info. The ';residents'; are completely in character and it is a fabulous visit, rain or shine. It is about 1-1.5 hours from Providence, call it two hours from Newport. You can also check out whale watching from Plymouth MA (same town.) Check captjohn.com; their web site still shows 2006 schedule, which was Sat/Sun/holidays staring 4/8. This is always great for kids and adults. This would be a long day; consider spending one night, then heading for, perhaps, Salem, old seaport, where the witch trials took place.

Weather is very iffy this year. We are in light jackets now and don%26#39;t know what will come. April is usually a bit chilly and usually rains.

With all the B%26amp;Bs in Newport, I%26#39;m sure you can find something there. Have you checked this website? www.newportinns.com

And Sturbridge Village is great for seeing village life way back when (for us, that is). I%26#39;d guess that Sturbridge is about 1 and 1/2 hours north of Newport.

Rosecliff where gatsby was filmed is lovely. Breakers is impressive, but the most beautiful is Doris Dukes mansion Rough Point, in my opinion. Also fun perhaps would be the Tennis Hall of Fame or Redwood Library, a gem if you like historical, cultural things. Sturbridge would be alot like Plymouth Plantation I think, a good alternative would be the new Indian museum near Mystic, which I hear is good.

An alternative to 95 is to go through the Hadlyme area in Connecticut, take the 50 cent ferry over the CT River. New England country at its finest.

We spent Thanksgiving in Newport with our 2 toddlers (1 and 3). We stayed for 4 nights at the Hotel Viking. It%26#39;s a beautiful historic hotel, they are kid (and pet) friendly and best of all...have an indoor pool that the kids loved.

We got a great package through GoNewport which incl breakfast and way too many attraction tickets for us to use. We went down to the docks, to several mansions, on a trolley tour of the city. The pkg even incl tix for ice skating, the movies, the tennis hall of fame etc.

The rooms are a bit small, but very classic and comfortable. The staff (with the exception of the front desk) was impeccable. By the end of our stay, the restaurant manager was calling our kids by name and carrying them to their ';choice'; of tables.

The lounge is relaxed enough that we could have a cocktail while the children had hot cocoa, but elegant enough that we actually felt as if we were having a night out.

Finally, the best thing we did was hire a photographer to spend a morning with us taking family portraits. We got shots on the roof, throughout the hotel, by the mansions, on the beaches and in a beautiful park!

One last note: We live near Princeton and would also highly recommend that as side trip to NYC as a previous poster mentioned. It certainly is a closer and easier drive from the city.

Either way, you won%26#39;t be disappointed.

    Shari

Try the Hyatt on Goat Island, which is right in Newport Harbor. You can walk from there to the wharf area, which has many shops and restaurants. Also consider B%26amp;Bs or inns (Francis Malbone, Hydrangea House, etc.) that are in abundance in the Newport area, many of them centrally located. Check B%26amp;B websites for more info.

some great hotels right in walking distance to eveything?

I would recemmend the Francis Malbone House. It is in town, walking dustance to everything and very nice.

There are many timeshares in Newport where the owners rent them out..go to www.tug2.net or else contact me at rojo123@webtv.net...when is the date of the wedding and I%26#39;ll try to help you oout

The Viking Hotel is old, beautiful, and smack in the middle of everything. Some of their rooms are small, but I think it%26#39;s very charming, and their top-floor deck has a bar with an awesome view of the harbor. I%26#39;d much prefer a turn-of-the-century building to the newer ones, just MHO.

We stayed at the Viking Hotel in Summer 2006 and it was a great hotel to spend a couple of days at. It is a 10mins walk to the center of everything. Romms are a touch small but we only slept there so it didn%26#39;t bother us. We were booked at the Attwater Villa, but one look was enough to make us scedaddle out of there.

Roger Williams Zoo & Newport Mansions Too Much for One Day?

We are planning a trip to New England the second week of April. Our daughter loves zoos and although we are staying in Plymouth, MA, we have heard that the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston isn%26#39;t all that nice and that the Roger Williams Zoo in Providence would be a much better choice. Would you agree? Also, we are also planning on seeing the Newport Mansions and I was wondering if the zoo and the mansions would be too much for one day if we left Plymouth pretty early in the AM. Thanks!!

Roger Williams Zoo %26amp; Newport Mansions Too Much for One Day?

RWPZ is certainly worth a visit. April 16-20 there will be special programs since it is school vacation week ( check zoo website) There is also a new Botanical Center in the park that you might enjoy. It will take about an hour to get from the park to a mansion where the last tour of the day starts at 5:00 pm. It%26#39;s certainly doable if the weather is nice.

Roger Williams Zoo %26amp; Newport Mansions Too Much for One Day?

Thanks a lot for the info, I really appreciate it! We are hoping to go to at least a couple of the mansions. I have read on their site that some of them open in late March/early April that are closed in the winter so we are looking forward to it.

    Sultana:

In my opinion, it would be too much to do both the mansions and the zoo in the same day but I%26#39;m not a high energy ';let%26#39;s squeeze it all in'; kind of person.

The drive from Roger Williams Park to the mansions will take approximately 1 hour and then a tour of one of the mansions will take approximately that long as well. The zoo isnt huge but it is a good size and well worth taking your time through. Other aspects of the park are just as lovely - including the old casino.

    rogerwilliamsparkzoo.org/visit/ParkGrounds.c…

There are ';old mansions'; to tour through that are closer to providence such as the John Brown house in providence or Blithewold mansion on the water in Bristol, RI - just to mention some alternatives.

    http://www.blithewold.org/

    http://www.rihs.org/tours.html

I would go to the mansions if the weather isnt great for walking around a park, otherwise i would go to the zoo and see if there are some other historical home alternatives closer to where you would be.

I am sure others would disagree but my opinion is that to do both is a bit much. I like to enjoy where I%26#39;m going, not rush through to get somewhere else.

We probably will make it a two-day venture, because we also like to take our time and look around, especially when it%26#39;s somewhere that we haven%26#39;t been before. Thanks for the great links!

    Hello

There is a lovely spa in the Providence Place Mall. It is called Spa Vure. Take a look at their website. www.spavure.com. I have been to this spa a few times for variuous services (facial, eyebrow wax, hair cut, pedi...) and all were very enjoyable. The spa is never overly crowded and is very relaxing. I highly recommned this spa. Enjoy

Spadyssey is lovely and very friendly, and the prices are good. You can walk there from the convention center, definitely.

    Hello,

We will be in Providence from a Thurs-Sund. for a conference at the convention center. we are looking for good lunch places nearby, preferable with nice atmosphere. We are also looking for dinner places not to be missed. We will have a car, so dinner doesn%26#39;t have to be near the convention center.

Also, is there a particular quiant shopping area?

    Thanks!!

    Good Eats

There is a good list of restaurants at pwcvb.com. click on visitors, then restaurants. Not on that list but excellent , Al Forno. Stop by visitor info center on first floor of convention center for menus, coupons, directions, and other advice

    Good Eats

    Some of my favorites:

Mediterraneo on Federal Hill, lovely Italian place.

Trinity Brewhouse right downtown next to Trinity Theater. Great beer, good food, friendly.

Hemenway%26#39;s. Unparalleled seafood (in my opinion) and incredible clam chowder.

    Narragansett to Bar Harbor, Maine

We have rented a cabin on a lake close to Bar Harbor for the 3rd week in July. We have to be there on a Sat. Any ideas on how long it would take us to get from Narragansett to that area?? Should we leave on Fri. and stay overnight somewhere on the way? We will have our small dog with us.

    Narragansett to Bar Harbor, Maine

It takes 90 min. to get to Boston, probably less than 5 hours total to Bar Harbor. You probably can%26#39;t check into the cabin before 3 so there isn%26#39;t any big need to get up there earlier. (Obviously you need to look into the check in time and plan for a trip to the grocery on the way.)

    beaching in Narragansett or Newport

We will be spending two days in this area on our way back from Maine. What are the differences/pros/cons to staying in Narragansett or Newport. We want a quieter beach, although we realize that July/August will be busy most places, but we%26#39;re not wanting to fight for a 5%26#39; x 5%26#39; square to lay a towel! Thanks a lot.

    beaching in Narragansett or Newport

If you just want the beach and maybe a few small shops, and a few restaurants then Narragansett should fit the bill, but if you want lots and lots of shops, restaurants/bars and the harbor scene then Newport is the place to head.

I%26#39;m not familiar with Newport Beaches but Narragansett has two state beaches to visit. Scarborough and Roger Wheeler. If it%26#39;s a hot day and especially on weekends the beaches will be very crowded. Mid week will be a little less cozy. There is also Narragansett Town Beach, but you need to have or purchase a beach pass to walk on the beach.

At the State beaches mentioned above, only a parking pass is required and there is a daily fee.

Hotels are another consideration. Newport has lots and they will be expensive. Narragansett has fewer places to choose from for lodging. Check the Trip Advisor Narragansett hotel page for reviews of hotels. Have fun!

    beaching in Narragansett or Newport

South County beaches (Narragansett to Westerly) have a lot to offer and close for pollution less often than the Newport beaches should you be traveling after a period of heavy rain. Lodging is often a bit less expensive but given the old ';you get what you pay for'; adage ask questions and read reviews. Most beaches in RI have a fee (parking or walk on or both) so ask the innkeeper about the ones in their immediate area. www.southcountyri.com has a nice description of the beaches and towns in South County (AKA Washington County.)

Break between New York city and Boston?

We will be in the states on a 10-day trip in june. We start in New York and stay there for 5 days and finish with 3 days in Boston - but where should we stay for a couple of days between these cities?

It should be a couple og relaxing and luxurious days.

Any good suggestions as to where to stay and what to see?

Ideas can be mailed to us at engedal(at)post.tele.dk

    Kind regards TorbenFromDenmark.

Break between New York city and Boston?

Stay in Providence at the luxurious Hotel Providence. Enjoy the architecture and epicurian treats by exploring this beautiful, walkable, artful city. Take the ferry to Newport to include Narragansett Bay and Newport mansions in your explorations. For all the details check out trip advisor attractions for Providence and Newport

Break between New York city and Boston?

If you are going to be in RI in the summer, I suggest Newport where you can walk to the beautiful beaches.

Book early though, rooms fill up fast.

I suggest staying in Jamestown (Conanicut Island) Rhode Island, rent a b%26amp;b. Here you will have relaxing island life, where you can take the ferry or drive to Newport %26amp; Providence.

you might as well go to Block Island, since you are coming all this way. I would book now, it is tough to get rooms, The ferry can be gotten in Narragansett, either High or low speed ferrys

Short break suggestions for a weekend AWAY from Rhode Island

We need to get out of town (Providence) for a short break. Usually, we go to New Haven or New York, Newport, or Boston. We%26#39;re looking for something a little different that is within a 3 hour drive from Providence. We know there%26#39;s a lot in MA, NH, CT and even RI -- but we%26#39;re pretty new to the area and so we don%26#39;t quite know what%26#39;s available. We%26#39;re a couple with an elementary-school aged child and we like nature, hiking, museums, historic districts, and all that good stuff. Any suggestions?

The Cape....what time of year are you looking at? April Vacation...?

Short break suggestions for a weekend AWAY from Rhode Island

Yes, for spring. But suggestions for other seasons would be welcome too.

Did you know that NH has a coastline? With lots of beautiful beaches? Odiorne Point is wonderful for checking out tide pools, counting lighthouses, biking or walking. Also if you have time check out the White Mtns and Kangamangus Highway...not sure about the spelling.

  • Party Place

Does any one have any suggestions for a place to hold a 30th birthday party? I was thinking of something like Dave %26amp; Busters but I am not liking what I see too much there and was wondering if any one had ideas for places that can hold 40-50 people and has fun things to do.

    Thanks!

    Party Place

ever think of going to the F1 racing place in Boston. Not sure if you are only looking locally, but a friend of mine had her company Christmas party there and they had a balst. They give you the safety gear, instructions, and then let you race against each other in heats. Sounded pretty cool.

  • Cruise Ship Docking 3/24/07

Our Carnival Cruise will be docking in Newport on 3/24 from 11:30am till 7:30pm.

What do we have time to do? Is anything in walking distance from the dock? or would we have to get transportation to take us places?

    Thanks for any info!

    Cruise Ship Docking 3/24/07

You%26#39;ll be docking in the harbour and have to take a shuttle to shore which will drop you off in the center of all the action. There is plenty to see within walking distance.

    Cruise Ship Docking 3/24/07

Plenty of shopping exploring etc, within wlaking distance. I%26#39;m sure there will be excursions on the boat that will include Mansion Trips, but if you want to do them on your own, you could take a trolley up to bellevue and do them on your own. You%26#39;ll tender in from the Harbor, and be dropped off right at the park where there is a bus stop and info booth.

Wait....March 24? That%26#39;s already passed. Do you mean April 24th on the Miracle?

    Which hotel?

Never been to Newport before and taking a 2 day/1 night trip begining of April. Which would you stay at The Hyatt or The Viking Hotel? We definatley want to do the Cliff Walk, see a mansion (The Breakers) and do a nice dinner. Also if you had to pick one place for dinner where would you go? Thanks in advance!

    Which hotel?

That time of year, I%26#39;d suggest the Viking, they%26#39;ve recently finished a renovation, and the location is better. The Hyatt is out on Goat Island, and in the summer has great views to watch all the activity on the bay...but for April, you%26#39;d probably be better off with the Viking.

Plenty of dining options to pick from:

Casual: Brick Alley, Red Parrot, Salas%26#39;, Scales and Shells, Zeldas

Nicer: Mooring, 22 Bowens, Clarke Cooke House, Rhumbline, White Horse Tavern, Tuckers, Pronto

    Funky Bar/Lounge: 5th Element, Salvation Cafe, 180,

I%26#39;d play it by ear and check out the menues when you get here, depending on the mood your in.

Also check out www.gonewport.com for alot more info...

    Which hotel?

2nd on the Viking, it%26#39;s closer to everything.

defintely do that white horse...it%26#39;s lovely...and the history is incredible.

For dinner, if you have to pick one I would say either Pronto or West Deck. Have fun!

    narragansett, RI vs. Ogunquit, Maine?

Has anyone traveled to both of these beach areas? We will be traveling to both, but I%26#39;m trying to figure out which one to spend more time at, or divide our time equally. We have about 5 days to spend between the 2. We%26#39;re traveling with 2 teens, a 9 yr old, and 5 yr. old, and we%26#39;re looking for a great beach experience (as opposed to arcades, etc.) Thanks a lot.

    narragansett, RI vs. Ogunquit, Maine?

Narragansett is pretty quiet, especially in the springtime, but offers much more of the ';great beach experience'; you seem to be looking for. Beach and water are beautiful, small-town beach community is in full force (cute movie theater, great ice cream at Brickley%26#39;s, bike and surf shops abound). It%26#39;s also very close to the ferry to Block Island, which makes a wonderful day trip. Ogunquit can be nice, but the beach itself often seems somewhat dirty, and has a bit of a ';honky-tonk'; vibe (perhaps rubbed off by osmosis by its trashy cousin, Old Orchard Beach). The main disadvantage of Narragansett is that things are somewhat spread out and require driving, because the main drag (Route 1A) is not really walkable. But the advantages are many ...

I would think the beach in Maine would be alot colder than Narragansett. I think there is a point on the cape where the water temp drops about 10 degrees. I would not swim anyplace north of the cape. It is cold enough here

RI waters are a lot warmer than Maine, or anywhere north of the Cape, for that matter. Most people don%26#39;t start swimming until end of June through August though. There%26#39;s a lot of nice kayaking in Narragansett up the Narrow River where they have rentals too. Plus you%26#39;re real close to Npt and Jamestown.

Hi, k49aztv, Quahog, and xia33. After looking at a few travel books, I was leaning towards Narragansett and your input helps me further. Thanks a lot.

Hotel on, or in walking distance to, Easton's Beach

I%26#39;m heading to Newport in late June, and want to stay either on, or very close to, the beach. I hear Easton%26#39;s Beach is nice. Can anyone recommend any good hotels on the beach?

Hotel on, or in walking distance to, Easton's Beach

There are 3 Hotels right across the street from Easton%26#39;s Beach Comfort Inn, Best Western, and Inn at Newport Beach.

Easton%26#39;s Beach is ok, but not the best.....2nd beach down the road is better....but there are no Hotels there.

Easton%26#39;s beach can have a seaweed problem, although in June you%26#39;re usually early enough before the big bloom comes.

It is a nice beach for walking though, and the Atlantic Beach Club is a 20%26#39;2 30%26#39;s something hangout during the weekend. (Bands, %26#39;Hot Bodies%26#39; etc....)

I%26#39;d suggest staying downtown and either driving to the beach or taking the Trolley.....not much else around the beaches when the sun goes down, you%26#39;d have to cab it back into town for eating/drinking/shopping etc...

Hotel on, or in walking distance to, Easton's Beach

Ditto 2nd Beach- much nicer, plus you can check out Purgurtory Chasm on your way there where legend has it Indians would jump across it in order to marry their maidens. 2nd or Sachuest is about a mile east of Easton%26#39;s. You could bike or even walk to any of them if you wanted. Easton%26#39;s is more of a scene; there is volleyball on weekends I think.

Thanks for the info. I%26#39;ll check out 2nd Beach instead. Appreciate the help. I%26#39;ve got no issue biking/driving to the beach, and staying downtown. What%26#39;s a nice hotel to stay at, that%26#39;s not crazy expensive?

  • Tax Benefit to Living in RI?

I notice there%26#39;s a definite development line along the east side of the city along the Mass/RI border. Is there some sort of reason for this? State taxes cheaper in one state than the other?

Tax Benefit to Living in RI?

Mass has lower taxes than RI....RI has some of the highest in the country.

Tax Benefit to Living in RI?

So why does the development stick to the RI side?

What development are you talking about...?

Look at the Pawtucket,RI/North Attleboro, MA and East Providence, RI / Seekonk MA borders and guess where the sales tax drops from 7% to 5%.....Sometimes companies arre forced to bite the bullet and build on the RI side, just to stay with the commercial growth, but usually they%26#39;ll pick MA over RI.

There are some tax breaks for artists living/working in parts of Providence and some Film Making credits for shooting movies in the Ocean State.

Rhode Island has cheaper house prices due to the difference in taxes. I live in Seekonk and I say there is at least a $20,000 difference between Seekonk and Pawtucket/E Providence for the same house

Milemarker, just look at a map. All the burbs east of the city are smushed inside the border. West side is growing out radially as a normal city does.

Quahog, thanks. That makes sense. I was thinking it was either a swamp or taxes. I%26#39;m assuming you mean lower property taxes. Income taxes are higher right?

Well, considering there is only 1 city (East Providence) east of downtown Providence, there aren%26#39;t many ';burbs'; to be had on the Eastern Border....it becomes Massachusetts, I guess I don%26#39;t understand what you%26#39;re asking....

I thought you were asking while all of the development is happening on the RI side of the border....it%26#39;s not....most development is happening, or happened on the Mass side of the border...see Seekonk, MA and Attleboro MA....not Pawtucket or East Providence as examples.

Rhode Island is essentially one big city from Warwick to Central Falls/Pawtucket/North Providence and from Johnston to East Providence. State taxes are higher in RI as well as income taxes. Rhode Island is a high tax state. It is a congested state with a lot of people in a small area. This does not mean that it is not a beautiful state.

At the Mass borders there are suburbs (seekonk) as well as Cities (Fall River and Attleboro) So I guess the nature of the area is the same on both sides of the border. RI a little more congested. The congestion is no where near as bad as Boston though. Hope this answers your questions

    Hotels in Downtown Newport

I%26#39;m looking for a clean, affordable hotel in Downtown Newport. Suggestions welcome. Thanks!

    Hotels in Downtown Newport

What time of year.....affordable can have many definitions depending on the time of year....

    Hotels in Downtown Newport

Ahhh, I see from your previous post yoou%26#39;ll be there at the end of June.....what sort of budgete do you have in mind? Last week of June the Tall Ships will be in town, and the crowds will probably be huge....hotels / B%26amp;B%26#39;s will be charging top dollar.

If clean and affordable is all you really want, you may want to try the America%26#39;s Cup Inn right on Thames Street. Its kind of an overlooked place, but may be more affordable than the other more popular places- and right in the heart of all the action on Thames St. You might want to also look at Las Palmas Inn on West Broadway, the more hip section of Npt where there are some great spots like the Salvation Cafe, Noreys, or the Corner Cafe. All is in walking distance.

  • sunday brunch

My husband and I are coming to Newport for our anniversary over Mothers Day weekend. I thought a really nice brunch could be found there.....Does anyone have any suggestions? We are looking for atmosphere as well as great food. The date is 5-13-07. I assume most places will be open if they do close for the winter months. Thanks!

    sunday brunch

The Alanatic Beach Club right next to Eason Beach is great.

    sunday brunch

Castle Hill has a great brunch, and the views are great. Also, over in Jamestown, the Bay Voyage has a nice brunch as well. You%26#39;ll need reservations for most places for Mother%26#39;s Day.

A little more casual, Brick Alley (on Thames Street) and the La Forge (Next to/overlooking the Tennis Hall Of Fame)

Also the Spiced Pear at the Chanler....

I%26#39;d have second milemarker0 choice of Castle Hill. It%26#39;s one of the better locations on the Island.

I figured I would need reservations - that is why I am looking now - thanks for your help. How far is the Bay Voyage from Newport? We aren%26#39;t familiar with the area....I have heard of the Chanler (spelling?) but didn%26#39;t know if it was a touristy kind of place.

I didn%26#39;t mean the Chanler , I meant Castle Hill - That is my first choice but didn%26#39;t know if I was choosing just because it is popular on websites. Thanks for all of your imput!

Bay Voyage is across the Newport Bridge to the Island of Jamestown....it overlooks the Bay towards Newport. About a 10 minute Drive from Newport (plus toll)

    www.bayvoyageinn.com

Castle Hill the views and service can%26#39;t be beat....you pay for it though.

    www.innatcastlehill.com

I booked us at the castle rock inn - at $55 per person for brunch is pricey but we aren%26#39;t spending much on lodging (attwater inn) so we can justify it - thanks for the recommendation. We are lookin forward to it!

    Hotel recommendation for girls weekend?

    Hi,

My friends and I (mid-20%26#39;s) are looking to plan a girls weekend in Newport this summer. Where do you suggest we stay to be close to the beach and/or nightlife? Recommendations for restauarants and bars would be great, too.

    Thanks!

    Hotel recommendation for girls weekend?

I think you guys will enjoy a long weekend in Newport, more than the Cape. I%26#39;d suggest somewhere downtown. There are several Hotels near all the action Mariott, Newport Harbor Hotel, Inn on the Harbor the Hotel Viking. They Hyatt is nice too, although it%26#39;s out on goat island. It%26#39;s a little walk to downtown but not bad on a nice day. They also have a shuttle van that drops you off downtown too. A couple of smaller hotels are the Jailhouse Inn and the America%26#39;s Cup Inn.

There are also lots of B%26amp;B%26#39;s around....go to www.gonewport.com for a whole list of those.

    Restaurants, Lots to choose from:

Casual: Brick Alley, Red Parrot, Salas%26#39;, Scales and Shells, Zeldas

Nicer: Mooring, 22 Bowens, Clarke Cooke House, Rhumbline,West Deck White Horse Tavern, Tuckers, Pronto

    Bars/Lounge: 5th Element, Salvation Cafe, 180,

Mudville Pub, Buskers, Garden Grill (Soon to be Gaslamp)

Pelham, Blues Cafe, Rhino Bar, the Landing, West Deck, Riptide, Cooke House, Smoke House, H20...many many many more

The best beach in the area during the day is 2nd Beach, you would have to drive, or take the trolley as it%26#39;s a couple miles out of downtown.

First beach is OK, but not the best, but in the summer the Atlantic Beach Club is full of 20-30 somethings hanging out, drinking and listening to the bands...the water is not as nice for swimming at 1st beach though.

Lot%26#39;s of things to do for 20-somethings.....I think you%26#39;ll like Newport better than the Cape (from your earlier post)

    Hotel recommendation for girls weekend?

Thank you so much for your help. I have some research to do now.

I like thinking about summer while we%26#39;re being slammed with snow up here in MA right now!

    Thanks again!

Where can we get married in Williamsburg area?

This June my fianc̩ and I want to travel to Williamsburg, VA to get married. It could be in Jamestown, Yorktown or anywhere close. It will be a simple wedding with only 5 people in attendance. Tell me about Spring Seasons Inn

We%26#39;ve stayed there and it%26#39;s absolutely lovely. The innkeepers are very accommodating, the breakfast is amazing, and the location can%26#39;t be beat. We%26#39;ve stayed at several B%26amp;B%26#39;s in Newport, and this one takes the cake! A++

Hosting Wedding Ceremony on Scarborough Beach

Does anyone have any advice? The ceremony will be late June 07 on a Sunday and I am concerned about the amount of people.

Hosting Wedding Ceremony on Scarborough Beach

Have you already checked with the State about regulations for beach weddings? Do you mean you are concerned about the number of strangers on the beach or the number of guests in your party?

Hosting Wedding Ceremony on Scarborough Beach

Both, I am pretty sure I can get the town ok. I am concerned for the amount of people frolicking about on the beach. I have not been to that beach in late June, and am not sure how traveled it is.

The beach won%26#39;t be as crowded as it would be in July and Aug and how many people are on the beach will depend on the weather and the time of the ceremony, but it is a public, state beach and it will be June!

Defintely check with the State on regulations. Good Luck.

It is a state not a town beach so the town won%26#39;t have anything to say about your plans. If the beach doesn%26#39;t work out you could contact the town about using the gazebo next to the Town Beach behind the post office in the Pier. Good view, nice park setting, and free.

Another choice might be at the Point Judith Lighthouse which is on a cliff with great views. That area is probably state owned too.

Harborside Inn or Holiday Inn Express?

We plan to spend the last 2 nights of a fortnight%26#39;s holiday in the Newport area. Having left our search for accommodation pretty late, we%26#39;re struggling to find somewhere that has a room for 3 in July that isn%26#39;t outrageously priced. Both the Harborside Inn and the Holiday Inn Express (Middletown) have availability and there seem to be pros and cons for each. The Tripadvisor reviews are helpful but we%26#39;re still undecided. We%26#39;re good walkers, so don%26#39;t really mind being in Middletown - and it sounds as though there are shuttles/buses - but being in the centre of Newport would obviously be more convenient. Does anybody have any comments which would maybe help us to decide? Thanks.

Harborside Inn or Holiday Inn Express?

The Harborside Inn would be my choice. The Holiday Inn is out in the boondocks. July in Newport is always expensive, anywhere on the water will be $$$, so, when in Rome as they say. The Harborside is central to all the activities.

Harborside Inn or Holiday Inn Express?

You can%26#39;t beat the location of the Harborside Inn. Right on the water, and now that Christie%26#39;s has shut down, the noise won%26#39;t be as much of a problem as it was in the past. There is a restaurant/bar on the first floor H20, but does not get nearly the business/rowdiness that Christies did. You%26#39;ll be close to shopping, eating, drinking, etc.

The Holiday Inn express is a few miles away in Middletown. Not very scenic, think strip malls and chain restaurants (Chili%26#39;s is in the parking lot). It%26#39;s not a bad hotel if you%26#39;re in town on business, but you%26#39;ll have to drive to Newport and in the Summer, that means $$$ and a headache.

Yes, Harborside Inn. I go by the Holiday Inn on my way to work every day, and that area of Middletown is nothing to look at. It%26#39;s not a bad area, but definitely not picturesque.

  • Private driver needed

Does anyone have any information on hiring a private driver for the day in Newport? There will be four of us coming into town the 15th of September and we are looking for basically someone to just drive us around. We already know what we want to do (for the most part) and wonder if this is a service we can get here... or would we be better off to get a taxi at the port and else where?

    Thanks for any information

    Private driver needed

I posted on your other message that I driver is not really necessary. If you didn%26#39;t feel like walking, you could call a cab up to the mansions, but there are also trolleys that go up there as well.

There is a guy that offers private tours of Newport, but if you already know where you want to go, i%26#39;d either use the trolleys, walk, or call a cab.

    Private driver needed

I agree that you don%26#39;t really need a driver. I have lived here for 10 years - have a brand new Acuraq RDX that will easily hold 4 passenger and would be happy to work something out with you. If you are interested let me know.

Things you will probably want to do -

    Shop

    Eat Drink

    Mansions

    Drive around Ocean Drive -

    Walk the Cliff walk

i agree with milemarker...next week will be my fourth trip to newport and i have been able to go wherever i wanted by bus, trolley or cab...mostly bus and trolley. RIPTA is pretty good on the island.

Enjoy your visit..it%26#39;s a lovely town.

Thank you so much everyone! I appreciate the response. I think we will be able to handle it with the trolley. That sounded like the best thing to me. I don%26#39;t mind walking everywhere, but my mom won%26#39;t be able to walk like me, so... if we could get a trolley to the mansions and then back... we are good for walking around all the shopping and dining area. For some strange reason, my mother can walk much better around the shopping centers? Does anyone else have this strange occurance?

Yup - I can do everything better around shopping centers.....have a good trip.

hyla, just to let you know..there%26#39;s not a lazier person on EARTH than me and I am extremely out of shape but I have no trouble getting round newport on foot. go over to thames street and shop the tourist traps...they%26#39;re fun.

    comedy shows and other nightlife

we are coming out for a long weekend (3 nights) and don%26#39;t want to spend each night in a bar or in the room- (I can%26#39;t believe I just typed that :) .... Seriously, does anyone know of any comedy clubs in the area or in Providence to go to at night.?I went on a few websites looking and didn%26#39;t really see anything. We are open to a show, concert or play....Thanks for any suggestions. - Oh we are coming from May 10th to 13th -

    comedy shows and other nightlife

Newport doesn%26#39;t have any comedy clubs or very exciting night life - but providence is only 35 minutes away.

    Depending on your age -

Boom Boom disco - very small bar/dance floor at the bottom of clarke cooke house - always a good time

One Pellham - rock and roll music

    Newport Blues Cafe

There are two places to see a play - firehouse theatre and Newport playhouse - nothing spectacular

You are also 50 miles from foxwoods and mohegan sun......spoiled for choise there.

    comedy shows and other nightlife

Check out the Newport Playhouse. They have dinner theater and cabaret and pretty much stick to light comedies. It%26#39;s near the rotary at the end of O%26#39;Connell Highway, just a few minutes north of the Thames Street area. For more info, see their website: newportplayhouse.com

thanks for the advice - I am saving both of these in my trips folders to look back on. Much appreciated!

  • Mansion advice

    Hello...

We are traveling to newport in late may and were wondering what combination of mansions/tours people would recommend. We%26#39;re not super into gardens etc. so we don%26#39;t want any highly specialized tours. Thanks!

    Mansion advice

You can go to Gateway Viaitors Center, where the buses are, and they have guided tours going from there. There are different packages available. The Breakers Mansion is the supreme one and a must see.

    Mansion advice

The visitors center is a great place to start. There are several mansions to tour, and how many you see should depend on how much time you have. As the previous poster said, the Breakers is a must see. If you only have a day, I would plan on touring no more than 3 houses. We did a day trip from Mystic and saw the Breakers, Marble House, and the Elms, and the time allotted was comfortable. These three homes do offer some specialized tours, but they cost additional money, and I feel the basic tours are enough to give you some history. If you have more than a day, you can add some of the other homes (Chateau Sur Mer, Rosecliff, and some of the smaller homes). Don%26#39;t miss taking the cliff walk, a beautiful walk along the ocean.

Yes, if I had to pick just one mansion, I%26#39;d go see the Breakers. For something a little different, Astor%26#39;s Beechwood is fun because the tour is conducted by folks playing the parts of the Astor%26#39;s servants. You should also check out newportmansions.org for more info.

The Astors Beechwood is my afvorite because of the actors that give youy the tour, the mansion is cool too.

Another vote for the Breakers...*I* would also like to see Rough Point-Doris Duke%26#39;s home, personally. It is only open seasonally however.

Yes Doris Dukes mansion has the most beautiful interior of them all in my opinion and most of it is as she left it. Her bedroom is unbelievable beautiful. Well worth the extra cost. The Marble House and Rosecliff are also really nice.

Best way for day trip from Manhattan to Providence?

We have one day (Memorial Day) we could go visit a friend in Providence from our base hotel near the UN. Should we do it? Would we take Amtrak all the way or take a train out of the city and rent a car at some other location? Any other options you can think of? Would we have time to see any mansions? Should we splurge for Business Class? We%26#39;re from the Pacific NW and know nothing about these distances and drive times. Thanks!

Best way for day trip from Manhattan to Providence?

For an easy relaxing trip take the train. The trip on the train takes between 3 and 31/2 hours. The faster train, the Acela ,costs more. You can decide if it%26#39;s worth it when you look at the schedule. Providence is easy to get around by foot or public transport, RIPTA.The mansions are in Newport an hour from Providence. There is a nice ferry run by RIPTA that can get you there. Providence is a beautiful, old city with an interesting history and architecture worth exploring. It also has great restaurants. You could plan a fun hassle free day in Providence and visit with your friend all in one day. Check out erikhastings.com, click on map, then on Providence below the map,and you';ll find Erik%26#39;s report on Providence. He%26#39;s a reporter for WABC in Manhattan.

Best way for day trip from Manhattan to Providence?

We often do day trips to NYC from Newport, by car...not the most relaxing driving but doable. Narragansett Bay is an interesting comparison to Puget Sound- the ferry ride to Npt would be worth it but the mansions too...may be pushing it. Prov is beautiful but Npt even more so, plus we have Atlantic Salmon..

Be advised that on a holiday weekend, the traffic going back to NYC in the evening could (and probably will) be hellish. If I had a choice, I%26#39;d take the train. The trains will also be full, but you won%26#39;t have to deal with the traffic. The economy class is comfortable enough, with more room than on a plane; I don%26#39;t think I would spend the extra for business class, especially since the ride is not that long -- but I%26#39;d say it%26#39;s closer to 4 hours to Providence.

I also think it would be a bit much to fit in a trip to Newport, unless you really like packing it in. There are plenty of things to do in Providence.

Thanks so much to all of you. I hadn%26#39;t even thought about the return-to-NYC traffic problem! I appreciate the hints --- think we%26#39;ll take the train and see what sort of adventures we can have in Providence!

    Stone House Club

My husband and I are looking to get away for a long weekend to the Newport area. However, we would like to stay somewhere serene and quiet and heard about the village of Little Compton. My concern is that I%26#39;ve heard the Inn is up for sale and have not been able to see any pictures of the rooms or much of the inside for that matter. Does anyone have any comments (other than the 3 I%26#39;ve read) about this facility and its accomodations, food, etc...?

    Sue in Hilldale, NJ

    Stone House Club

I%26#39;ve been going to the Stone House Club for years with my family. The location is it%26#39;s greatest asset. The rooms are clean and okay-nothing to write home about. The food is okay-again-nothing special. You can walk to beautiful beaches and there are wonderful little food markets nearby. Most weekends in summer the Stone House hosts weddings and wedding parties and it can be loud. We only go during the week now. The area is very, very nice! Louise

    Narragansett beaches

Hello, we%26#39;ve been to Narragansett about 10 yrs ago and loved it. We liked the combination of beach relaxation with other ';things to do';. Now we%26#39;d like to come back to the area, but with kids, in late Aug. We%26#39;d like to rent a vacation home near the water/beach, but I%26#39;m confused about which beach(es) to be close to. There%26#39;s Narragansett beaches (Scarborough), but there are several parts to them (eastward, pier, etc), there are also lakes, rivers, ponds, there are houses on private beaches, etc, etc. What%26#39;s good to be near to with kids of various ages (6-12 yrs of age)? Also, at that time of the year, right before school stars, what other activities would you recommend to do with this-age kids?

Thank, any recommendation would be highly welcome.

    Narragansett beaches

Narraganssett Town Beach is in the historic Pier area and is owned by the town. The beach is quite long and popular but well patroled and very clean. It has both parking and access fees, consessions, and showers. It is one of the premier surfing beaches in New England

Scarborough State Beach is closer to Point Judith Lighthouse. State owned it has parking fees, no access fees, consessions, and showers. Last year the State had a ';carry in carry out'; trash policy and there were complaints about stray trash. Hopefully the state will re-think that plan. Stay on the northern end of the beach if the wind is blowing from the south or you might get a wiff of the sewage treatment facility. Don%26#39;t worry, it is a very nice beach, decent waves, attracts a teen crowd.

Roger Wheeler State Beach is considered the kiddie beach as it has a wide flat bottom that isn%26#39;t too deep. Protected by the harbor jetty you never get much wave action. It has a playground and consessions, showers. parking fee and is said to be very nice although I%26#39;ve never been there myself.

Salty Brine State Beach is at the tip of Galilee in front of George%26#39;s Restaurant. It is free but parking can be a bear in the area. Small, no services (but close to the ferry and restaurants.)

Bonnet Shores Beach has a private beach club and little public access. If renting by a pond or river check to see if swimming etc. are allowed and pleasant (how deep, what%26#39;s on the bottom - mud weeds, sand, rocks.)

For a better list of the beaches and area activities see www.southcountyri.com

    Narragansett beaches

For rental houses check Cyberrentals.com look under the Narragansett, Scarborough and Bonnet Shores pages for available homes. You can also check Durkin Cottages, they have a web site or just type vacation rentals and Rhode island into a search engine and you%26#39;ll find web sites.

If your kids like to skim board or body surf, Scarborough is a good choice. Adventure Land near the Stop and Shop in the Scarborough area has bumper boats, batting cages and a nice mini golf. You can also rent a movie from BlockBuster in the Stop and Shop plaza.

At the North end of Scarborough the kids can walk towards the cliff and visit the tidal pools and look for little sea creatures. Have them wear their shoes or flip flops.

If you get a couple rainy or cloudy days, you can visit the Mystic

(CT) Aquarium, about 40 minutes from the area or visit the Mystic Seaport or head into Newport (RI).

Maybe your kids would like a half day fishing trip on the Frances Fleet, they are located in Galilee near the Block Island Ferry or just take a ride on the Southland to tour the local waters.

The great thing about the Scarborough/Pt judith area is the beach is never that far away no matter where you stay.

    Have fun!

Another option is Misquamicut Beach in Westerly, RI. It%26#39;s about 30 minutes south of Narragansett, and that much closer to NJ. There are plenty of houses in the immediate area to rent. Misquamicut is a state beach and very large. Along Atlantic Avenue, which parallels the beach, are restaurants, seafood shacks, and amusements (mini-golf, waterslides, carousel, arcades). The commercial stuff fades away when you%26#39;re on the beach, though. Westerly has a sweet downtown area, too. The beach area of Westerly is about 20 minutes north of Mystic, CT. For more information, see the Westerly/Pawcatuck Chamber of Commerce website, the Misquamicut Business Association website. On the MBA website are summer rental links.

We are originally from RI, and go back to rent a beach house every year. We love the Charlestown Beach -- Breachway. It is quiet, safe for kids to ride bikes around, and has lots of kayaking and hiking within walking distance of the beach -- and very close to bird sanctuaries, bike paths, state parks and much more quiet and less busy than Narragansett.

  • Block Island in Mid-May

My parents want to go to Block Island from Long Island in mid-May. Is anything open at that time or does it all remain closed until the end of May? Also, does anyone know how to get there in May - the ferries appear to only run from Montauk from June to October.?(Don%26#39;t tell me those poor people are stuck out there on that island all winter long!) Any information would be helpful - thanks!

    Block Island in Mid-May

Many of the island%26#39;s business are open, at least during the weekends, by the end of April. While the majority of hotels, inns, etc stay shuttered until Memorial Day weekend, a few such as the Atlantic Inn and the Manisses Hotel keep a light on all year.

Other than sailing or flying over using one%26#39;s own boat or plane, the only way to get to BI in off-season is by commuter airline from Westerly RI (on the CT state line) or by ';slow'; ferry from Pt Judith RI (due south of Providence.) Vehicles can be taken on the ferry, but you need to reserve ahead of time and it%26#39;s not cheap.

The ';shoulder seasons'; (mid-May to Independence Day, and Labor Day to Columbus Day) are an awesome time to take a BI trip during. You won%26#39;t freeze - or melt, and the mobs that take over the streets in town and the beaches are nowhere to be found.

    Block Island in Mid-May

I have been to BI twice, both in May (I have friends with a rental house and we stay their for our vacation before rental season). Had a great time, both times. Places are generally open, just with more limited hours. *much* easier to get around by car, you can always find a space. It is also a great time to enjoy the trails and hiking without a ton of tourists. It really feels like your own island. One thing to keep in mind it is *cold*. And I am from Buffalo, my tolerance is high. You should bring long pants and sweaters. Rates will most likely be more reasonable at this time. I always took the ferry out from RI so I don%26#39;t know about montauk. I know you can take the ferry from new london and point judith at that time of year. We were brave and actually went swimming. The beaches have alot of rocks that early so wear shoes if you try this, and be prepared for cold water.

Has anyone ever rented the Hemenway House on BI?

Wold like to know if this house is worth $2500. / week and if not, what house would be?

    Thanks

Has anyone ever rented the Hemenway House on BI?

Yes, I have stayed there twice. It is a three bedroom with a very large master bedroom. Twin bedroom is great for two kids. The house has a great view and you can see the ferries come in, It is within a very short walk to mansion beach as it%26#39;s biggest selling point. It is one of the most popular beaches and you have a front row seat. I would definitly reccomend it. The outdoor shower is great for after the beach. They also keep alot of good reading material on the bookshelves, which was good on rainy days.

    Getting around

Are there any trolleys that take you around the island ? Any other mode of transportation once you get there or is everything walking distance from the ferry ?

    Getting around

    Hi,

The best way to get around on Block Island is to bring your mountain bikes. That might be tough seeing that you%26#39;re comin from Indiana. They do have plenty of bike rental spots in the downtown area, walking distance from the ferry. You can charter a bus, but it%26#39;s expensive. Taxis aren%26#39;t bad. Depending on where you%26#39;re staying, you can walk to the downtown area for dinner and drinks pretty easily. To navigate the island, definitely use the bikes. HAve fun--it%26#39;s a great island!

    Getting around

Thanks for the info, we are just coming over for the day , not sure we could do bicyles.

Ooops , can%26#39;t ride or spell bicycle either .....LOL

Ooops , can%26#39;t ride or spell bicycle either .....LOL

You can rent scooters for the day. There are several rental agents right where the ferry docks. Most everything is within walking distance though. And there are taxis that will give you a tour of the island for a nominal fee.

    Young Couple Relocating to Providence

Hi there, I%26#39;m looking for some recommendations on what portion of the city to start looking to live for a young married couple without a whole lot of money. We%26#39;re relocating from a comprable sized city in the midwest.

    Young Couple Relocating to Providence

What sort of budget do you have for rent or mortgage...? Also, where will you be working...right in downtown Providence?

    Young Couple Relocating to Providence

Probably around 175k max. Not even sure we%26#39;re going to buy since the housing market looks like it%26#39;s going to crash. Renting for anything under 1000/mo. Yea, work would be downtown.

The nicest part of Providence is the East Side....Brown University, Thayer Street (Shopping, restaurants, etc) are all located there. But finding something for $1,000 might be tough, but not impossible.

Not much Downtown except for some high end luxury apartments/condos going up. Although there are some cool lofts you might find if you%26#39;re into that....

You could also look at parts of Pawtucket that are up and coming, and cheaper.

Warwick and Cranston are cheaper alternatives, but more suburbia than Downcity....

Check out craigslist for an idea of what you%26#39;ll be facing.

    Hi Loui1:

I%26#39;m not sure how young you guys are but I know that there are affordable and perfectly nice apartments to be had around the providence college area. Though those might be more for someone who has a little experience with Providence first, as it is not the best area of town - its not the worst either.

My friend lived in a great triple decker house in that area (cant remember the name of the street of the top of my head) but it was well kept and spacious. It is a college/immigrant neighborhood and the buildings are older (as is true of most of providence) though and so may not be exactly what you are looking for. She never experienced any problems over there.

    Good luck.

Regarding the housing market, I wouldn%26#39;t expect the East Side market to crash, unless maybe you are thinking of buying a condo. Houses on the East Side in the lower price ranges are not going to get any more affordable, sadly, because the East Side is so desirable. However, on your budget, you might not be looking to buy on the East Side now anyway. I do believe that you could find a rental in one of the East Side neighborhoods at $1000. I found a cheap rental through Doyle realty when I moved to town.

Some areas of town to start looking in are Wayland Square, Summit, and Fox Point (Doyle Realty). All three areas are on the East Side, but they have very different characters. Off the East Side, you could try the Armory District or the Providence College area. Again, these are relatively affordable areas but with very different characters.

Appriciate the replies. I%26#39;ll be working downtown but wont be opposed to living out in the burbs. Are the roads that congested you wouldnt recommend commuting? I didnt think it was that large of a city. I may also have an option to work in a south burb of Boston, while my wife works in Providence.

It looks like Providence has a significant higher cost of living from where I%26#39;m coming from, so living farther out may be our only option for a few years.

As far as the housing market crashing, I had friends tell me the same thing about desired areas of Chicago, Louisville, and Minneapolis and now they%26#39;re holding their breath as the investor home buyers all around them are defaulting on mortgages. Not to say it%26#39;ll happen on the east coast, but it%26#39;s just a concern this year.

The roads can get congested but is nothing like Boston. Bumper to Bumper for two or three miles the worst we see. As far as housing, finding a house for 175 would be almost impossible. I live in Seekonk, MA the house (two bed, nice yard) next door went for 220k and the house on the next street weht slightly above 200K no yard no basement. These type of houses are hard to find.

Another idea is the Darlington section of Pawtucket, nice area for Pawtucket, single family houses, small lots 5,000 sf. Could get more house for the money than seekonk. Taxes are higher though.

WE live in Fall River which is another great area close to Providence but try Edgewood which is just 2 to 3 miles from downtown Providence and similar to the East side of Providence but lots cheaper . Nice area. Warwick is another option as well.

You might also want to look at East Providence (a separate municipality from Providence), Cranston, or Seekonk, MA.

    moving from Michigan

We may be moving from Michigan to Rhode island soon. I am leaning towards East Greenwich for its schools.

I have read a few posts on other forums about the stress level being intense in the state. Also, some references to people being unfriendly. My kids are 6 and 3. They will need to make new friends.

Would anyone be kind enough to comment? I couldn%26#39;t bear to make my kids miserable. Thank you.

    moving from Michigan

Your kids are going to love it here. The beaches are less than 30 minutes from East Greenwich. The summers are wonderful.

I don%26#39;t know about EG but most cities/towns have recreation programs for kids, sports, etc. for little or no money. Downtown Providence is another place to spend time in the summer - live theater in Waterplace Park with Waterfire following. Great place for families to spend time together.

We also have the Paw. Red Sox - a small ball park with Boston Red Sox farm team that draws quite a few people and a good way to spend an evening with the kids.

There is a lot of culture, with live theater with Broadway shows, sports, museums (RISD being one) Brown University, Opera, Ballet, etc. Our beaches are very nice and don%26#39;t forget to visit Newport - the mansions, beaches and restaurants.

People here are very friendly and it is a small state, so most people know most other people. East Greenwich has good schools but you will have to pick and choose your acquaintances, as you would anywhere else.

    Good Luck

    moving from Michigan

We also have wonderful parks. Besides E. Greenwich check out Barrington and Cranston. All are nice places to live with good schools. Have you visited the state yet? I think a visit to look at communities with a good realtor would not only put your mind at ease but make you excited about a move to R.I.

Forget what you hear about unfriendly New Englanders. This is actually a surprisingly friendly place.

About your kids and you: Many folks have lived here for generations, not far from family and old friends, etc. That%26#39;s their frame of reference. The first few times (or the first dozen times) they see you, they just don%26#39;t know you. To break through this, you need to do two things: 1. Be sure to encourage your kids to make good friends in school, then invite these friends to your house for play dates, casual parties, kid movies or sleepovers, go to the ice cream place together., etc. Keep asking. Be a welcoming Mom to the other kids. 2. Show up at school parent meetings, pick your kids up at school, go to the kids%26#39; sports things, sign them up for ballet, volunteer to be a room mom or chaperone on class trips, whatever. After the other parents have seen you over and over, suddenly the ice is broken. It really is a case where YOU need to show up repeatedly. No matter what your schedule is, you must make yourself visible.

About the stress level being intense: nope. We have the usual proportions of motivated vs not-too-motivated adults and kids. East Greenwich and Barrington do, however, have higher proportions of top-level executives and medical folks, who live that lifestyle. To break into that social swirl, you will, again, need to be visible- get involved in the charities, fundraisers, etc. EG and Barrington are the best schools. (Others will name their own school systems, but statistically, these two are the best for younger kids. They have some issues in high school- in some cases, too many teen freedoms.) The East Side of Providence is a great place to live, but most parents send their kids to private schools.

    You will enjoy RI.

Thank you for posting your replies so quickly. Great advice! I do all of the extra curricular activities now, so it won%26#39;t be a change for me. I grew up in a resort town on Lake Michigan, and Rhode Island seems similar. I have not been there, but we will visit before accepting an offer.

I%26#39;ve read that driving from Barrington to Providence is difficult, otherwise I would consider a relocation there as well. Thank you everyone.

Here%26#39;s the RI joke: They say the reason certain areas of RI are still pristine, not full of condo developments, etc is: no one wants to commute more than 15 minutes. Things, of course, are changing, but the joke reflects our... well, let%26#39;s just say many people here would never survive in suburban Los Angeles, Chicago or Dallas, where ten miles can take 60 minues at rush hour. On the other hand, many commute long hours up to Boston or drive from far off to bring their kids to the private schools in Providence.

Barrington to Providence is 6-10 miles. At one point, the road narrows, but maybe that makes it 20-25 minutes at rush hour and there are alternate routes. It%26#39;s actually easier to get into Providence from Barrington, because there%26#39;s a long winding road into many parts of E.G. It%26#39;s really about which lifestyle you want. Both towns are beautiful, but have their detractors. Both are on the water; some say these towns are too ';homogeneous.'; Come visit and most real estate people here will be quite honest and open about your choices.

This really is a beautiful state. Not always the most exciting place, but a good place to live. Lots to do and only 4 hours from NYC. Good place to raise kids, once you get into a good school system.

Your children won%26#39;t be miserable, rest assured. Rhode Island is wonderful! I wouldn%26#39;t live anywhere else. We%26#39;ve got everything we need in short distances -- the beach, the arts, the colleges, the history -- you name it. EG is in the middle of the state and easy commute to anywhere else in the state. (I%26#39;d prefer EG to Barrington.) Narragansett Bay is gorgeous. My town, Westerly, is a fantastic place to live, if you don%26#39;t mind the commute to other parts of the state (we%26#39;re in the southwest corner, right next door to Connecticut). Don%26#39;t worry, you%26#39;ll be fine here.

Barrington,East Greenwich,Cranston all good public school systems. RI is a small state with losts of quirky little communities. Check out the entire state before making a move. Hook up with a couple of different realestate agents and have them take you around you will get a feel for each area. Good luck!!

Growing up in RI is great and if it werent for the fact that we have to live where we do now for my husbands business, I would be campaigning hard for a move to RI for when we have children. Your kids are going to love it.

East Greenwich is supposed to have the best school system, though Barrington is just as good. I would lean towards Barrington but that is probably only because I grew up in nearby Rumford (and my parents and all of my friends) still live there.

My child has lived most of her life in RI and likes it just fine. However, as someone who has lived in many different areas in and outside the US (and even lived for some time in Michigan!) I consider myself qualified to comment on the %26#39;unfriendly%26#39; aspect of Rhode Island. The state is very small, and after a few years it seems as if everyone knows everyone. There are many wonderful people here, and you will meet them and be happy. However, when you are dealing with Rhode Islanders that you don%26#39;t know (in a store, for example, or a restaurant, or just on the street) you will generally find that yes, Rhode Island can be a very cold and unfriendly place. Rhode Islanders are pretty curt and I do think that they are often rude. I%26#39;m sure they don%26#39;t mean to be, and it%26#39;s nothing personal, but it is very noticeable to me. I%26#39;ve always thought that this is something that holds Rhode Island back as a tourist destination. Anyway, I%26#39;m pretty used to it now, but when I travel outside Rhode Island (and to a lesser extent, New England in general) I do find myself noticing how friendly the people are. So, maybe you will be lucky, and not feel that people here are unfriendly, but if you do feel this way you should know that you%26#39;re not the only one.

I am planning on visting both Providence and Newport on the weekend. I would love to park my car somewhere and just walk around. My problem is that I am the worst on-street parker! Does anyone know of good lots to park my car in either of these locations?

    Thanks!!!!

At the Providence Place Mall you can park for 3 hours for $i.00 Roger Williams National Memorial and the John Brown House each have their own parking lots if they are on your visit lists.

    Thanks for the ideas!

    Restaurant- ambience a must!

    Hello,

I am taking my fiance to Newport for a birthday weekend and I am looking for a restaurant with my highest priority in ambience. My fiance is a vegetarian so unfortunately the usual steakhouse or seafood place will not do. Pronto was highly recommended in our conditions but if anyone knows of a non-stuffy, candle-lit, soft interior restuarant I would love the recommendation.

    Thanks ahead!!

The Spiced Pear or the White Horse Tavern Restaurants come to mind.

    Inn at Castle Hill

here%26#39;s their 3 course dinner menu:

    Also, Tuckers:

I would suggest the Rhumbline in the Point Section of Npt- but like Prontos %26amp; other restaurants like you want they can sometimes be loud I would think the White Horse Tavern %26amp; restaurants at Inns would be quieter.

Both my husband and I are vegetarian, and are staying in Newport this weekend. Although I%26#39;ve never been there, I found this restaurant online...which looks like a nice Italian place...with (to my surprise) a FULL vegetarian menu.

Castlehill has the best atmosphere by far. They offer vegetarian selections on their menu. The setting is spectacular!
