Admiral Fitzroy vs. Harborside Inn

I am travelling to New England for business and am looking to stay in Newport Jan. 15 - 19 and based upon price and availability have narrowed my hotel/B%26amp;B options to Admiral Fitzroy and Harborside Inn.

Any opinions on which to choose?

Thanks

Admiral Fitzroy vs. Harborside Inn

I chose the Harborside Inn so I will have a forthcoming review.

Admiral Fitzroy vs. Harborside Inn

They are right across the street from each. Harborside is on the water, Fitzroy on Thames St. The company that owns the Fitzroy does a top notch job of maintaining their buildings very professional staff. The company that owns the Harborside create more motel-feeling properties and amenties. My vote would be the Fitzroy. Hope you enjoy Newport - You%26#39;re coming at a quiet time. Know that not all shops will be open and some restaurants might be closed for renovations. If you%26#39;ld like more suggestions, I%26#39;ve lived in Newport for twenty years and would be happy to advise. Email me at msgh2929@yahoo.com

I found out that the Fitzroy is closed Tues. and Wed. night (half of my stay). This must be a winter slow time operating schedule.

Ideas for April in Rhode Island?

Hi,

We%26#39;re coming into Pawtucket with a small group (16) in late April to see a PawSox game. We thought we%26#39;d make it a weekend and stay over, but we need ideas of what to do the next day in the area? Any suggestions? Also any recommendations for restaurants in the area. Appreciate it.

Ideas for April in Rhode Island?

Guess it depends who%26#39;s in your group - adults only or kids too? Will you have a car? Not much to do right in Pawtucket, but plenty in Providence and really throughout the state. And there are so many great restaurants, but what kind of food and price range are you looking for?

water parks

Hi everyone,

We%26#39;ll be travelling to Wakefield RI in august with our teenage sons. They would love to spend some time in water parks or other theme parks - but especially water related. Any advice? Mags

water parks

Well the only options you%26#39;ll really have are going to be drives.Since there isn%26#39;t any in RI..

But you have Canobie Lake Park in Salem,NH which is roughly a 2 hour drive from Wakefield.

http://www.canobielake.com/

Or a 2 1/2 hour drive to Water Country located in Portsmouth,NH

http://www.watercountry.com/

Or another option is to take a 2 hour drive out to Six Flags in Agawam,MA

http://ww.sixflags.com/

Or you can visit a smaller place out in Bristol,CT called Lake Compounce which will take you roughly 1 1/2 drive.

http://www.lakecompounce.com/

But those are about the only options that you%26#39;ll have for the area..They%26#39;re all around a two hour drive like I mentioned.

Hope this helps.

That%26#39;s really helpful! Thanks a million. They%26#39;ll have to earn road miles to get there!!! Mags

Astors Beechwood and New Years

Is the Astors Beechwood worth $100.00 for New Years Eve or can someone recommend some other entertainment for that evening. We are dragging our 24 yr old son with us because we are going to visit family in boston after that. Thanks

Astors Beechwood and New Years

How did you do? did you end up at the Astors?

Well, we had a great time, as always. Some observations.

First, don%26#39;t hesitate to bring your down clothing this time of year because when the wind howls, boy o%26#39; boy it was freezing. Some days were sweater only, however.

The Red Parrot is still my favorite restaurant and I will never go back to the Brick Alley Pub. There was a long, long wait and altho service was excellent, the food was so-so. The salad bar is filthy; don%26#39;t go near it and if you order a salad with your dinner, the wait staff makes them at the bar. You%26#39;re warned. I must say, tho, that a chocolate cake/ice cream dessert that was served in a huge glass was top-notch and reminded me of Serendipity on 60th Street.

Thanksgiving Buffet at Fathoms, the restaurant at the Marriot, was excellent and I suspect that the food there is consistently good.

Firehouse Pizza is a disaster, Skip it.

The pastries at Panero%26#39;s on America%26#39;s Cup are excellent.

In an earlier thread, a writer posted a note about the Boulangerie at 382 Spring Street. Skip it. You can make better baguettes in your breadmaker at home; the brownies were from a mix and the vegetable quiche was dry and far too salty. Oh, and the young lady behind the counter was OTL (as in ';out to lunch';).

I%26#39;ll be posting some comments about the Inn On Long Wharf later should you be interested in reading about this Fairfield property.

    Just Got Home

i know this was after Thanksgiving, but I would like to know how Inn on Long Wharf was. I am thinking about buying points from there.

    Newport Grand/Best Western Mainstay

Has anyone stayed at the Best Western Mainstay and has anyone gone to the Newport Grand (casino)? What were your thoughts? We%26#39;re not gamblers (haven%26#39;t been to Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun or even Las Vegas) but the Newport Grand sounds like it might be fun ($.01 slots seems like it might be the way for us non gamblers to go). The hotel appears to be right next to the casino; how far is it from the main Newport area? Thanks to all who respond.

    Newport Grand/Best Western Mainstay

Its across the street. Ask for one of the new rooms when you book (fall 05). You are about 3 minutes from the main downtown Newport area, about 5-8 minutes away from the Mansions. I can%26#39;t comment on what locals refer to as the Fronton (Newport Grand)....I know they are planning a huge addition with hotel etc. Newport is like the Cape in winter...no waits, no lines, lower prices, same food!

    Newport Grand/Best Western Mainstay

I have never stayed there but, am familiar with the location..You may want to reconsider your options....RENOVATIONS....have you read the reviews? I would do a little more reseach and stay at an Inn. You do get what you pay for as far as the ';Fronton'; it is a VLT video lottery terminal. No coins dropping paper vouchers you have to cash in with a cashier nice bar area and one of the only two places you can snoke in public in RI. 2nd floor.. I hope this helps enjoy!!!!

Well, it looks like we won%26#39;t stay at the Best Western Mainstay. And I%26#39;m also now thinking we won%26#39;t even both with the Casino. We%26#39;ve done one trip to Newport (many many years ago) and stayed at the Hotel Viking. We%26#39;re on the Cape and hope to take a long week end trip to Newport in February, see a few mansions, enjoy a few shops, and have a nice dinner somewhere. Thanks for the information from everyone.

Good decision. ;-) Not a great place.

    Newport in February

My family (which consists of me, my hubby, and 2 kids.. ages 5 and 2) will be in Newport RI for a weekend in February.. for a family event. However.. we would love some suggestions on things to do or see once we are in the area... things the kids would enjoy, etc. It%26#39;s been YEARS since I%26#39;ve been there.. so I%26#39;m not sure about what would be a good thing to do once we are there in the area. Any suggestions for anything the area or nearby areas?? And especially during this time of the year.. when the outdoors isn%26#39;t as accessible.

    Any help would be appreciated!!

    Thanks! ;o)

    Newport in February

I%26#39;d go to Roger Williams Park Zoo. It%26#39;s in Providence, but only about a 45 minute drive over the bridges ( great fun).

    Newport in February

Check out the Fleet Skating Center, which is brand new and only open in winter as it is an outdoor ice skating rink. Have a good trip!

If you%26#39;ll be in Newport the last 10 days of Feb. they%26#39;re holding the annual Winterfest, which has lots of activities and fun things to do, especially for kids. If not, the Born Skating Center is right downtown, for ice skating and great for families. Check out gonewport.com -Have fun!

Where to stay in Rhodes Island

We are going to Rhodes Island in at the end of July for a week (wednesday to wednesday). Where is the best place to stay to enable us to see Rhodes Island and any recommendations? We would prefer to stay in an apartment or house but are open to suggestions?

Where to stay in Rhodes Island

The Inn at Castle Hill is a great place to stay with a wonderful location. Try the beach houses. If you really want to rent a home try cyberrentals.com.

Where to stay in Rhodes Island

If you%26#39;re going Wed - Wed, you%26#39;re not going to be able to rent a beach house. They typically turn over on Saturdays.

There are two areas to consider.

Newport, if you want to focus on history (gilded age mansions) and beaches.

Or Providence, if you prefer a city atmosphere. Museums, cultural attractions, great restaurants, etc.

From either ';home base'; you can drive the length of the state in less than an hour.

For more information, I would visit the state tourism web site (www.visitri.com) or the Newport CVB web site (www.GoNewport.com)

I suggest you make reservations very soon. All the good hotels get booked, and supply and demand is in control of the costs. Inn on Castle Hill is gorgeous, but not close to town. As long as you rent a car, and don%26#39;t want to go back to the hotel until later, it is nice. It is one lane of traffic when you want to come and go, and can be very busy, or clogged because it is on the Ocean Drive which most people enjoy site seeing while driving. Slow travel. Although you can travel the state in an hour, not from Ocean Drive in the Summer. Highly suggest to make it to Castle Hill on a Sunday if you are there. Cookout on the lawn music and beautiful people. They may have discontinued the music, but it is a great atmosphere. Everyone goes to the Candy Store that night. Crowd at Candy Store 30-60

If you%26#39;re going in the summer, you%26#39;ll want to stay by the water. That%26#39;s the Ocean State%26#39;s prime time. In Newport, do the mansions, walk the Cliff Walk, bike along Ocean Drive, fly a kite on Brenton Point (or just watch the pros) and ride the carousel at Easton Beach. Great place for a sunset drink: The Chanler at the beginning of the Cliff Walk (watch out, dinner there is expensive).

I agree that it would be tough to find a Wed.-Wed. rental. Stay at the most reasonable hotel or B%26amp;B you can find in the Newport-southern end of the state. You%26#39;re not going to spend much time in the room if the weather%26#39;s nice -- the state%26#39;s too gorgeous!

Other nice spots: Do a sunset picnic in Jamestown at Beavertail. Take the ferry from Jamestown to the Rose Island Lighthouse. If you plan ahead, you could even spend the night there. And take at least a day trip to Block Island, which may be the prettiest spot on earth. If you can be there not on the weekend, you can even find a reasonable place to stay. The Block Island ferry leaves from the fishing village of Galilee in Narragansett, which is interesting to visit for its fishing fleet, fish dinners and good beach. Across the harbor entrance is the village of Jerusalem (but you can%26#39;t get there from Galilee, look at the map), which has dining at little, homey places on the water like Skip%26#39;s Dock. The state beach there, East Matunuck, is truly fine.

The one city thing not to miss in Providence if it%26#39;s happening the weekend you%26#39;re there, though, is WaterFire, when fires are lit on the rivers in Providence and everybody cruises up and down listening to music, watching street performers, people watching, etc. And it%26#39;s totally free.

Check out StayNewport.com (their phone number is listed- better to call than email.)

It is a free, local reservation service that may be able to help you. I grew up in Newport and it is beautiful! If you cannot get a house, try a suite at a timeshare like Wellington Resorts or Newport Bay Club, or try an Inn or B%26amp;B which will be your best value.

Large hotels in Newport (Marriott,Hyatt etc..) tend to be very overpriced and less charming/nothing special.

Stay in Newport if you want a good location- not Middletown, which is the next town over- short drive but not walkable.

    Also, check out Gonewport.com

By the way- the state is Rhode Island, not Rhodes Island :)

    Newport in April

Hello. I amplanning on traveling to Boston and wish to stop for 2 nights in Newport. My family (myself, husband, two kids and elderly mother) plan on spending the day in Newport, seeing the Breakers and other grand %26#39;dames%26#39;. Can someone suggest a clean hotel which would be convenient in terms of location for such a short stay without breaking the bank (I%26#39;ll need two roms). We do not need to be at the beach..too cold.

    Newport in April

    Hello,

April is not quite in season yet, so first I would check the large hotels%26#39; rates since you have a group and may want extra ammenities for the kids. There are only a handful in Newport: Marriott, Hyatt and Viking are the 3 largest. The Hotel Viking is on Bellevue Ave, great location, nice restaurant, bar and spa. Some rooms are a bit small because it is an older hotel. The Marriott is a typical average Marriott. The Hyatt is the largest, and has a nice spa. I believe all 3 have indoor pools. I would go for the Viking for charm and convenience.

Inn at Newport Beach is a more basic hotel but not quite walking distance to town. Some rooms offer a view. It is very short drive to town and walkable to a handful of restaurants but not walkable to downtown Newport. It is on the Newport/Middletown line.

Wellington Resorts, Oceancliff 1 %26amp; 11 and Newport Bay Club are all time share properties that offer suites/townhouse style rooms for families. Not super upscale but Wellington and Bay Club are great location as well. OC 1%26amp;11 is out on gorgeous Ocean Drive next to Oceancliff Resort -not walkable to town but beautiful area.

There are also tons of Inns nd B%26amp;B%26#39;s... Best value as they include breakfast but some may not be great for kids.

Try calling Staynewport.com it is a free local reservation service that can go through availability. Their phone # is on their site.

  • Newport with 2 year old's???

Can anyone suggest some good ideas for a weekend with 2 - 2 year old%26#39;s in Newport??? over Easter weekend??? or am I crazy?

    Newport with 2 year old's???

I don%26#39;t know anything exciting for a 2 year old at this time. Newport really doesn%26#39;t liven up until summer, and Newport is more of an adult atmoshere. They have parks of course, but what are the child%26#39;s interests? Your interests?

    Newport with 2 year old's???

I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;re crazy! Newport is not overly kid oriented, but there are thousnds of families in Newport and there are things to do. Plus, Easter is not prime season so it will not be overly crowded with the late night singles crowd that you would see in the summer.

There is an Easter Egg hunt at one of the Mansions every year- I forget which one... Rosecliff I think....children are dressed to the nines- very cute and fun!

There are tons of Easter Brunches and buffets in town at a lot of restaurants that are definitely family friendly.

There are parks, and the beach of course. It is nice to just wlk around as long as the weather is nice and of course there are a lot of great restaurants from casual to upscale.

Check out gonewport.com for other info and calendar of events as well.

  • Where to stay???

Can anybody recommend some place to stay out of the many listed here? I will be bringing my mom for her birthday during the week of the winter carnival (Feb.18). We have never been here and I want to find a nice hotel where I can just park the car and walk to everything. The B%26amp;B%26#39;s look very cute, however, I really want 2 beds in the room. Any suggestions and tips? Thank You!

    Where to stay???

If you would like a 2 bedroom unit you can try The Wellington. It has mixed reviews. I never had a bad experience there but haven%26#39;t stayed there in a while. It is on lower Themes and therefore walking distance to most shops and restaurants. The Francis Malbone is in town, on Themes as well and has much nicer accommodations but you will have to inquire about room set ups. Castle Hill is a wonderful place to stay but on Ocean Drive and you would have to drive into town.

    Where to stay???

Also consider the Admiral Fitzroy Inn, right next to the Malbone House. It%26#39;s less expensive than the Malbone but very nice, and has off street parking and is within walking distance of most of the waterfront and downtown area. Be advised, however, that if it%26#39;s cold and/or the winter wind is blowing you may not want to be doing much walking at that time of year.

Lots of Inns and B%26amp;B%26#39;s offer rooms with 2 beds. They will be more affordable and include breakfast. Many are right in town.

There are the hotels as well, of course, that will be pricier. Marriott (typical chain) and Viking (historic)are in great locations.

A few Inns of the top of my head that are right in town are the Brinley Victorian, Spring St. Inn, Attwater Villa, Black Duck Inn... there are a lot.

Try calling StayNewport.com (number on site) They are a free local service that can give you availability and book the room for you.

looking for the best ';family beach'; in RI to spend the day

    Hello everyone,

My family and I will be driving through Rhode Island this June and would love to spend a day at a nice beach. Nice in our minds means sandy, decent waves, and not too crowded. I have researched this topic and the Narrangsett area caught my eye. What do you think? Also, would you recommend a beach in the Providence or Newport area? Thanks so much

looking for the best ';family beach'; in RI to spend the day

When we were kids, our parents always took us to Roger Wheeler beach (then Sand Hill Cove) or Salty Brine (Galilee) where the waters are calmer, but we clamored for Scarborough or Narragansett where the waves are bigger!

If its waves you crave, Narragnsett is the beach. It%26#39;s the top surfing spot in the state.

It%26#39;s hard to get away from the crowds if it%26#39;s a good ';beach day'; unless you get the opportunity to go the beach mid-week.

There are no beaches on Providence. Providence is a port, very industrialized along the waterfront.

Newport has some beaches, but not with the size of the Narragansett beaches, and not the waves. With so much of Newport%26#39;s waterfront either developed or private, it%26#39;s harder to acess.

Another great spot for picniking and watching the surf is Beavertail Light State Park in Jamestown. It is located on the southern tip of Jamestown, and has sweeping views of the ocean.

looking for the best ';family beach'; in RI to spend the day

I have to say that I agree. I have an apartment right near the Narragansett Town Beach. It is one of my favorite beaches! It is clean and the people are friendly. The waves are amazing and its a safe place for kids. This has been an awesome time and I will regret having to leave my apartment as will my family because they love to come and visit!

Roger Wheeler beach has the reputation for being the beach for kids. The sand is great and there is a %26#39;playground%26#39; on the beach (I%26#39;m not sure how old your kids are).

Thanks everyone for the information. My kids will be 10 and 6 and like ';medium'; waves...no bodysurfing for us!! As long as they are on a floatee and bobbing around, they are happy. Are the waves at Roger Wheeler SP usually like that?

Sorry, but I don%26#39;t like Narragansett Town Beach. Its confined and crowded- and has a hefty cost. Scarborough, practically next door, is gorgeous. Depending on the weather, it can have those great crashing waves. Good parking and there are bathrooms, showers and a concession stand right there.

BUT, if your children are younger, nothing beats Wheeler/Sand Hill Cove. Lots of families there. It%26#39;s has a small play area, bathrooms and showers, concession stand, etc. Waves are gentle as this is some sort of inlet. It%26#39;s where we took our girls until they hit teen years.

All three beach areas are close enough that you can drive by and decide.

BUT MOST IMPORTANT: June just isn%26#39;t good beach weather in RI! Please check the online weather info including water temp.

    Newport

    Hi

I am travelling to New England at the end of March and would like to visit Rhode Island. Would it be feasible to stay in Newport and visit all the other areas from there or do you recommend staying somewhere else/changing hotels each time we want to visit another area?

    Thanks!

    Newport

Newport is not exactly central, though the answer to your question depends largely on what you plan to see while in Rhode Island.

It might well make sense to spend a few nights in the Providence area as well as in Newport. Providence is over an hour drive from Newport, there is a lot to see in the city, and Providence is also much more central than Newport.

    Newport

Thanks for your reply. I wanted to go to the Newport area and Providene area as they both look really nice in the guide books. Maybe we should stay for one or more nights in both places then. Does anyone know how easy it is to travel between Newport and Providence by public transport? thanks...

RIPTA runs a bus between Newport and Providence--number 60. It runs about every half hour during the week and every hour on weekends and takes a little over an hour.

Thank you for your help. I have just heard that as we are travelling at the end of March, a lot of places in Rhode Island will be cloased as it is out of season. Is this right? are we mad to be considering visiting at this time?!

I don%26#39;t think you are crazy to come in March. The advantage is that Newport is less crowded then. The downside is that it could be cold, and some things will be closed. Some of the smaller attractions are closed until April, but main attractions like RISD museum and the Newport Mansions are open year-round. So are shops.

I thought I sent my response, but I didn%26#39;t see it. My answer is March is not too live in Npt., so check if the mansions are doing tours. they are beautiful. I suggest stay in Providence, more to do, and the bus is only an hour. Boston 1.5 hours. Bus is easy to npt and as long as you are only touring newport and not bar hopping, catching the bus is just fine. buses only run until 11 last time i knew and on sunday they don%26#39;t run as often.

Most everything (restaurants, inns, hotels, mansions, bars, etc..)is open in March.

Check out a calendar of events and other info at www.gonewport.com

New Englans is big, so you will have to change accommodations with every area you travel to. You cannot really have one home base, unless you are only sticking to RI.I would suggest at least 2 nights wherever you go.. 1 night will be very rushed.

I live in Providence. What do you hope to see in RI? Providence is probably not the place to stay. We are known for our universities and our food- because of the influence of Johnson and Wales U, we have some amazing restaurants, big and small, expensive and cheap. But, other than some quaint neighborhhods and art galleries, Providence is NOT comparable with, say, Boston. Yes, the RISD Museum is great, but it is tiny. It can be seen in an hour or two. I would only suggest you stay in Providence IF a ';Waterfire'; event is scheduled. (Look online for more.) Plus, Providence will be an expensive option. Newport will also be pricey- but now you%26#39;re near the water, in a quaint, old seafaring town. (Tripadvisor has many B%26amp;B%26#39;s shown- we ourselves are considering a getaway to Newport.) Sometimes you can see cruise ships in the bay, sometimes military ships. And, there are the Newport Mansions- not to be missed. Did you know that RI is roughly one hour, from the northern border to the southern. Thus, you could stay in Newport (or its environs, if $ is an issue) and easily trek up to Providence or out to another area. March is probably ok for travel. Some recent years, it has been blustery and rainy through the month. Most of RI that you would visit or near tourist areas is clean and safe. Good Luck.

    Providence solo? restaurants?

Any suggestions for restaurants I won%26#39;t feel like a complete dork dining in alone? (or just good restaurants) I%26#39;ll be there for three days, mostly for business, but plan to get out and do some things when I can. Thanks for any input.

    Providence solo? restaurants?

There are so many wonderful restaurants to pick from in Providence.

I would go with a more casual pub style one not sure what your comfort level is many times you can eat at the bar and still enjoy the save great cuisine.

Here is a list of restaurants with links and phone numbers. A phone call will give you a feel of the reception you will experience at each

    Providence solo? restaurants?

No problem eating alone in Providence. We are home to Johnson and Wales U, Emerils%26#39; alma mater, probably the 2nd or 3rd best cooking school in the US. Don%26#39;t miss some of our fabulous restaurants because you are solo. My favorite: Pot au Feu- downstairs. (ps I have eaten solo in many cities large and small, Amrican and European. I always bring a book or magazine just in case something makes me feel the need to occupy myself. usually don%26#39;t need it.)

You are close enough to drive down for the day and check out the area...right now is a great time to stop in agent%26#39;s offices and stroll on the beach...with your dog...our wife...If you were writing from the West coast I might add more but get out of Seth Thomas town and pack a picnic and see for yourself...80 miles door to door...what are you witing for?

    is newport onshore good?

Looking to use some timeshare weeks to take a family vacation. I see no reviews on the Newport Onshore, 405 thames st. Is this a nice resort and nice location with quality amenities?

    is newport onshore good?

If you are into timeshares the best reviews are on www.tug2.net.

Onshore rates high....I have it booked for the end of March.

    is newport onshore good?

yes, npt onshore is nice, in a great area for touring. What time of year?

We had a wonderful experience at the Newprt Onshore. Great service in the office, adequate parking, spacious and comfortable accomodations with great views, nice heated pool. Great location (walk to most everything in Newport). Overall a wonderful getaway!

Newport Onshore just went through a major renovation 2 years ago. New everything. I am biased becuase I own many weeks there but I have a lot of pictures on my website. Newport is expensive in the summer but I am currently looking for a place in Key west for teh winter and to my surprise that is more expensive.

I love Newport for the location and summertime fun. based on the posting guidelines I can not give you the website but if you want to emial me I can send you a link.

We%26#39;re looking for feedback on the Rhumbline restaurant, both positive and negative. Thanks. :)

    Th Rhumbline Restaurant

great restaurant esp fri and sat nights with live music

    Th Rhumbline Restaurant

Thanks. We have reservations for New Year%26#39;s Eve weekend. :)

The Rhumbline is our favorite restaurant in Newport. You%26#39;ll love it!

We had dinner at the Rhumbline on December 30. It was perhaps one of the best dinners that I have ever eaten. The service, ambience, and food was close to perfect. Next year, I believe that it will be our New Year%26#39;s Eve dinner. :)

shhh...don%26#39;t ruin a great little local star by announcing it. We%26#39;ll never get in once the tourists arrive.

Rhumbline is great. Eclectic food and nice atmosphere. Tell them John Rizzo sent you and they will throw you out. Only kidding. My niece and her husband run it and the food is excellent. It is a very diverse menu so if you are a meat and potato person go somewhere else. If you want to have your palete and eyes be execised then go there.

    Newport in Winter

As a friend of an employee of a national hotel chain, i can get a great winter rate at a popular hotel in Newport. Been to Newport before, but always in the summer.. Been to the Mansions...what else is there to do in wintertime?

    Any suggestions.

Also, do alot of the restaurants close for the winter?

    Newport in Winter

I like Newport in winter, as there are not so many crowds and many of the restaurants and shops are open. I tend to like to look at the art galleries for something to do. I am not so sure about other attractions, though. The mansions are the main thing, and some of the attractions I am familiar with in the area are closed in winter.

If you would have a car, it could be a good time to head up to Providence and see visit the RISD art museum, if you are interested in that sort of thing.

    Newport in Winter

thanks, we%26#39;d be coming from Boston via car...so yes..thinking maybe some of the wineries too that are said to be open year round, i will check their websites..and the art galleries as well.. a walk along a snow covered beach sounds relaxing as well..... never been to the beach during winter.....unless you consider Boston Harbor the beach...........

Things that I like to do in the winter are take advantage of the great rates at the Spas (esp the Stillwater at the Hyatt). Newport Art Museum is really nice. Small, but nice collection - great for a couple hours of browsing. Yes, some restaurants close - check their websites and CALL. One thing that never changes with the season is the bar scene. Great martini/cigar chic bar/restaurant is Asterix on Thames St. For the shops that are open, they are fun to browse. Not your ordinary fudge/t-shirt shops that dominate many small tourist towns. Newport is a nifty walking town, so if you catch good weather, just walking town is nice. The Newpor Winter Festival takes place around Valentines Day and offers lots of things to do. There are concerts and fun things. The Visitors Bureau has a website with a calendar of events. Check it out - gonewport.com - Good Luck

No, the restaurants do not close. There are tons to choose from. At night, there are always bars.lounges, and pubs. Many have bands, some DJ%26#39;s. The crowd varies in age, dress, etc.. depending on where you go.

Aside from the mansions, there is the Newport Art Museum, and other museums, art galleries, the ice skating rink, antique, clothing, jewelry, coffee shops... scenic Ocean Drive is nice for a drive. Just walking around town is nice too.

Check our gonewport.com for calendar of events and more info. Have fun!

I spent a week at the Long Wharf Resort two weeks ago. We had mild weather, so we were able to stroll the area (the only crowds were at the outdoor skating rink down at the wharf). However, we did find that MANY restaurants and clubs were closed. We had seen the mansions and most other attractions in years past, so there wasn%26#39;t much to do right in Newport. We took daytrips (Providence, Foxwoods), and otherwise enjoyed the amenities at our resort.

BTW, I recommend the Brick Alley Pub %26amp; Restaurant in Newport, which DOES stay open in winter. Cozy, casual atmosphere (at other restaurants I needed to keep my jacket on!), extensive menu, salad bar, great wine list, excellent service.

    Theatres

My wife %26amp; I are planning a trip near Provicence, Rhode Island, either In July or October 2006.We would like to go to some performing arts theatre shows while there.

    Any suggestions ?

    Theatres

P.S. The theatres can be anywhere in RI, not just Providence. Thanks

    Theatres

Trinity Rep in downtown Providence is an excellent and award winning theatre, and you can always do dinner at Bravo or Gracie%26#39;s before the show (both excellent, Gracie%26#39;s being very upscale, Bravo moderately upscale). 2nd Story Theatre in Bristol (?) is a neat little theatre, if you are south of Providence. Check them both out online.

And of course, do not forget about Providence Performing Arts (PPAC)...check it out on-line...it is an awesome place with fantastic shows!!!

  • Condo/ House Rental for week in July??

    Hi:

Just wondering if anyone out there has a 2 bdrm home or condo that is available to rent one week in July or August. House must be child freiendly as we will be traveling with our 2 year-old. Thanks in advance.

Condo/ House Rental for week in July??

By the week is difficult in Newport, since it is illegal to rent for less than a month (though some landlords do it illegally).

Property owners in Middletown, next door can rent legally by the week. One couple I know of has rental cottages within walking distance of Easton%26#39;s (First) Beach, a few of which are two bedrooms. A friend of ours rented from them two summers ago and said the units were very charming, clean and well maintained, and child-friendly. Also, reasonably priced.

Try calling 401/849-8092. I think they are on Cyberrentals and have a website though I don%26#39;t know the name etc.

    Good luck.

Condo/ House Rental for week in July??

Thanks localobserver. we%26#39;ve found week long rentals before (on ebay) but you end up waiting until the last minute to book something and we%26#39;re trying to avoid that. i had no idea that was illegal. when i used to live in nyc, i rented for a month at a time for a few summers, but always ran into people renting weekly. I%26#39;ve found that Newport has really been getting a little out of control with hotel prices in the summer and when traveling with a toddler, you never know how it will turn out! I notice you live in newport... i have considered it a few times...how do you like it? The closest we got was getting married at the Eisenhower House almost 4 years ago. Newport is our home away from home. Thanks for the info, I%26#39;ll check it out.

go to www.oceanstaterentals.com to find a nice 2 bed 2 bath place.

go to www.oceanstaterentals.com to find a nice 2 bed 2 bath place.

I checked the site; it appears to be mostly time share condo units. These can be rented legally by the week, since they are classified as a hotel and are doing nightly rentals. However, that tends to be more expensive than some of the house/cottage weekly rentals in Middletown and Portsmouth.

On the other hand, some of these time share developments have amenities, such as swimming pools, that can%26#39;t be found at house rentals. Thus, it depends on what one is seeking for their money.

    Good luck.

    narragansett waves

Unfamiliar with RI beaches, but have two teen age boogie boarders from Long Island. How does the wave action compare?

    narragansett waves

Narragansett is the beach you%26#39;ll want. Consistent waves, lots of surf action.

    narragansett waves

Narragansett Town Beach is one of the finest surf beaches in New England. Check surf conditions and web cams through the local surf shops www.warmwinds.com or www.gansettjuice.com.

Agree, Narragansett Beach allows surfing and alike. Some RI beachs do NOT allow this type of activity.

  • Newport in February

My family (which consists of me, my hubby, and 2 kids.. ages 5 and 2) will be in Newport RI for a weekend in February.. for a family event. However.. we would love some suggestions on things to do or see once we are in the area... things the kids would enjoy, etc. It%26#39;s been YEARS since I%26#39;ve been there.. so I%26#39;m not sure about what would be a good thing to do once we are there in the area. Any suggestions for anything the area or nearby areas?? And especially during this time of the year.. when the outdoors isn%26#39;t as accessible.

Also -- any suggestions on affordable lodging. Preferably a hotel with a heated indoor pool??

    Any help would be appreciated!!

    Thanks! ;o)

    Newport in February

The Wellington is a time share type hotel that has sleeping quarters, living room and kitchen suitable for families. They have an indoor and outdoor pool as well. They are located on lower Thames.

Winter is a great time to visit Newport but since outdoor activity is limited it will be a little more challenging with children.

A ride out to the bird sanctuary is always nice and can be educational for children.

The outdoors is still accessible, it%26#39;s just cold! If we get a half decent day (today is sunny and 45 degrees for instance) then bundle those babies up and take them to the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence. The grounds are beautiful, one of the nicest zoos you%26#39;ll see, and some of the exhibits are indoors.

Also Newport has a very nice public skating arena where you can rent skates.

Did you book, we are booked Pres weekend at Onshore resort on Thames center of everything, plan to swin in the indoor pool, public ic e rink and lots of eating and pb hopping taking 3kids 5-10years too and they are psyched we take short trips frequently and I think this place was kid friendly but adult fun too. We plan to give them their time in the pool and our time at meals when they are tired and hungry and coloring books and book puzzles are cool to occupy planning dinner at Brick Alley Pub casual and good from what i have heard.

Good Luck maybe we%26#39;ll see you there.

Roger Williams Park and Zoo is the place to see when in Rhode Island with kids, its awesome, with great animal exhibits and incredible grounds over 475 acres of beautiful trees and a spectacular rose garden. Fun rides on the lakes in paddle boats for all.

You don%26#39;t say which weekend in Feb you will be here but the Winter Festival will be running from 2/17 - 2/26 and you can find the list of activities at www.newportevents.com

    Good Luck

The Viking Hotel has an indoor pool and can be quite reasonable out of season. It%26#39;s on Bellvue and it walking distance to town.

    Block Island Honeymoon

We are heading to Block Island for our honeymoon in September and need recommendations for places to stay. We would like someplace romantic and isolated and that is somewhat newly updated.

    Block Island Honeymoon

try the Gothic Inn.. went there with my husband, very nice Inn.. here%26#39;s the info.. Block Island, Rhode Island

    Phone: 401-466-2918

    800-944-8991

    info@thegothicinn.com

    Block Island Honeymoon

The Atlantic Inn, Spring House Hotel, Old Town Inn, Sullivan House, and Hygeia House would all fit the ';isolation'; criterion better. Each have their own Web sites. Also check out the Block Island Chamber of Commerce%26#39;s site for more extensive inn/B %26amp; B listings. Some of the B %26amp; B%26#39;s on the island only have one or two guest rooms, which in and of itself is on the ';romantic'; side.

Although it is close by the Old Harbor (';downtown';) area, the 1661 Inn has always won major points for being cozy and intimate. The exterior isn%26#39;t all that impressive, but from what I hear the rooms are luxurious and have Jacuzzis. Plus, a lot of non-guests are drawn to the champagne brunches on Sundays.

Any place you find with an address on Dodge St or Water St is going to be right in the heart of town, which it sounds like you%26#39;d just as soon not have as your surroundings.

The Sheffield House is a place just a short walk out of town. If you like the convenience of being close to town but want a quiet, nice place to stay-that%26#39;s where you want to go. The breakfast was amazing and we really enjoyed our stay there. We will definately go back next year. It was like staying on Block island at a friends house-really good!

We just came back from a wonderful family wedding there and everyone stayed at the 1661 Inn. The wedding was there, too. They have a lovely honeymoon suite, overlooking the ocean (and with a Jacuzzi), and split-level, more elaborate suites with fireplaces and Jacuzzis. You can walk to town or rent bikes, which is really fun. Just watch out for the crazy tourist drivers, especially the ones in SUVs (too huge for the narrow streets) and the moped drivers (inexperienced).

The 1661 also includes a full, very satisfying breakfast each morning, and ';nibbles'; from 4-6 pm, which includes wine and snacks. They also always have coffee and tea available in the lobby.

I would actually rent a cottage for your stay. I do it every summer and it%26#39;s very peaceful and secluded and always much nicer than any hotel. You have to book relatively soon though. You can get some really nice homes for a week or two and then just go to the town grocery store and stock up some lunch stuff. You%26#39;ll end up eating out for dinner anyway. Renting a house is truly the best way to go and usually ends up cheaper than staying at a hotel/B%26amp;B. Go to the BLock ISland Chamber of Commerce website and under Professional Services you%26#39;ll see a bunch of real estate agents. I used Ballard Hall Real Estate this summer -- they tend to have the best selection. Ask for Rosemary and tell her that Suzanne Filippi recommended them. I%26#39;d also plan on bringing a car over (preferably something fun like a jeep wrangler -- haha). Driving around and discovering all the beautiful dirt roads on the island is one of my favorite things to do. Drive down Corn Neck Road and you%26#39;ll be blown away by the beauty of the island as you come to the lighthouse. Have a wonderful honeymoon!!

  • Trains to Rhode Island

I%26#39;m visiting Boston from the Uk end of May for 6 days and thought may get out to Rhode Island for a day trip. Can you tell me if the trains are safe from Boston and is it worth taking this trip.

    Thanks

    Trains to Rhode Island

There is commuter rail from Boston to Providence, It leaves early and the morning and returns around supper time. Their are more frequent trips if you can get to nearby Attleboro, MA. Providence has great resturants, other than that and waterfire a day trip to providence may not be worth it if on a tight schedule. If you rent a car, that another story. If you hussle, you could sneak in a day trip to Block Island (leave the car in Narragansett) Newport is okay for a day trip, beaches in narragansett and westerly are recommended. Providence is a city, their is not much in Providence to do you can%26#39;t do in Boston. Tell you the truth their is not much to do in boston for 6 days. Impossible to get red sox tickets (worth it if you can) Resturants are more expensive than providence (not as good). I would try to work in the Cape and Rhode Island. A car is recommended except the Cape on weekends is impossible to drive and Boston every day but weekends is the same way.

    Trains to Rhode Island

Trains are very safe, but may not get you where you want to go. The big attraction in Rhode Island is the beaches. They don%26#39;t call it ';The Ocean State'; for nothing. Miles and miles of coastline varying from open ocean with pounding surf to small harbors along the Narragansett Bay. To really see this per o the state, you would need a car.

Providence is a nice stop. The water fires are usually done on Saturday evenings, bonfires floating along the river, the river walkways are illuminated by the fires, and there is music performed. Providence is fun to walk around, and they do have some great restaurants, but you will find it not much different than Boston - just smaller.

I have to disagree with the previous poster that there is not enough to do in Boston for 6 days. I lived in Boston for eight years and never ran out of things to do!

Boston to Providence by train is an easy trip of about an hour. Providence is a beautiful and walkable city. From the train station you could walk to Benefit St. the ';mile of history';a preservation district of eighteenth and nineteenth century homes, visit the Museum of Art at RISD, walk along the riverwalk, visit the Roger Williams National Monument, stroll through the Brown University campus, eat at a wonderful restaurant, and return to the train station all in one very full day.

    St Patrick's parade

I just read today that there is a St. Patrick%26#39;s parade in Newport on March 11th. Is it any good? Is it a good night in the pubs afterwards? Thanks.

    St Patrick's parade

yes and yes. Draws a good crowd depending on weather and bands from all over the upper east. Bars very crowded.

    St Patrick's parade

We actually plan a week%26#39;s vacation around the parade and St. Patrick%26#39;s Day. The parade is a lot of fun and the nighttime is even better! You should give it a try...

The biggest party event of the year.

    Good parade. You can pick from several pubs along the parade route. They usually paint the line in the center of the road Kelly green when it hits the irish section, referred to as ';The Fifth Ward';

    Hotels in Providence

We are planning on visiting Providence in May and would like to know which hotels may be best recommended for proximity to site seeing, affordability and cleanliness. We are driving down but plan to leave the car parked and take local transportation or walk if sites are close enough to do so. Any suggestions?

    Hotels in Providence

You would probably want to stay right in the center of Providence if you%26#39;d like to do some walking and use public transportation. Depends on your price range. I don%26#39;t know where the best deals are at the hotels, but the primary downtown hotels are The Westin, The Providence Biltmore, The Hotel Providence and The Marriott. How long are you visiting? Adults only or with kids?

    Hotels in Providence

Also, the Courtyard Marriott, which is right downtown in walking distance to restaurants and to Providence Place Mall.

Thanks for your suggestions. Sorry I didn%26#39;t respond sooner. I have been checking out many of the hotels mentioned and others but don%26#39;t want to spend an arm and a leg for a room which many of the hotels in downton Providence seem to want! We%26#39;ll be staying for 3 days and I%26#39;ve been reading up on staying further out from downtown but am not sure how convenient bus service is to downton Providence. If staying just outside Providence, is it hard to find parking downtown or is there a train that runs from Warwick or other spots to downtown Providence?

Well, the advantage to staying in Warwick would be that you%26#39;re also mid-way between Providence %26amp; Newport and there are lots of things to see and do in Newport as well as Providence. As for transportation, trains are pretty non-existent here in RI - except if you want to take one between Providence and Boston. There is bus service, although I don%26#39;t know exact details. You can go to their website at www.ripta.com for schedules, etc. As far as having a car, there are plenty of parking garages in Providence where you can park pretty readily so driving in isn%26#39;t much of a problem. If you want any other info, let me know.

You can park in the garage at Providence Place Mall for $1 for 2 or 3 hours. You can park in the lot at the John Brown House, on Charlesfield St., have a tour of this wonderful 1786 historical home and then leave your car there as you explore the area.Guided tours are even available.

    Ocean House Hotel

The Ocean House Hotel has been closed for years!!! why is it then that tripadvisor has it as one of the top rated hotels in Rhode Island ..... hhhhmmm? Tripadvisor seems a bit outdated if I dont say so myself!!

    Ocean House Hotel

This place is totally closed its been closed for some time why tripadvisor has it onone of there best hotels is quite amusing. The veracity of tripadvisor is obviously in question is this is a fine example of it.

    Ocean House Hotel

Yes, you%26#39;re correct in that the Ocean House is currently closed. Last year, when it was announced that the property had been sold and was slated to be developed with condominiums, a local group stepped in, and it looks like that the future of the Ocean House is restoration.

What I%26#39;ve done when I%26#39;ve noticed that a local business has closed/changed names is notify TripAdvisor. I%26#39;m sure it%26#39;s a challenge to keep up with changes to the amount of information they have to keep.

Not sure where you%26#39;re getting your info, but the OH in Watch Hill RI has been accepting reservations since %26#39;99, and has had a limited number of rooms available up until last Labour Day, when, indeed, the future of the place was in doubt. In addition to a fairly good restaurant with awesome views, there%26#39;s a great terrace (open this year, at least it was 6/23) to enjoy a cocktail while taking in Fishers Island Sound and the ocean breezes.

I live 1.5 miles from the place, so I have had the good fortune of enjoying the place in recent summers...pity most of it is closed this year....

    Swabjockey,

That%26#39;s interesting that you found the OH terrace open; maybe it was for some occasion or short period? When you call the OH number, they have a message that it%26#39;s ';....closed for extensive renovations.'; Then they direct you to the chamber of commerce to find something else. In any case, according to the local paper just yesterday, it looks like the future of the OH will be a tear-down and re-creation. Too bad they couldn%26#39;t save it.

Updated information is that it is slated for domolition but is to be rebuilt in 2008 as an exact replica with all of the new amenities sounds like it should be great!! But until then it is closed so why does tripadvisor have it listed as a valid spot to stay over nite?

As of January 1, 2006, Watch Hill%26#39;s Ocean House Hotel was a massive pile of demolition debris waiting to be hauled away by contractors. However, the local consortuim that purchased the property plans a 2007 or 2008 opening for a completely replicated Ocean House with exterior architecture that faithfully reflects the iconic structure it replaces. Sadly, demolition of the original building, parts of which dated to the late-1860%26#39;s, was necessary. Never insulated, it had always been open only for a 10-week season from late June until Memorial Day. Furthermore, installation of plumbing in the 1920%26#39;s was done at expense of the building%26#39;s structural integrity, and Rhode Island%26#39;s very strict fire codes meant that for many years, the building%26#39;s upper floors were closed to hotel patrons. These limitations will all be remedied when Ocean House reopens as a year-round hotel destination. Stay tuned!

Thanks for posting, BellaWesterly. I have a lot of fond memories of the Ocean House. I grew up on Hubbard St. in Westerly (where my folks still live) and along with my sister worked there for a couple years in the 70%26#39;s when the Brankert%26#39;s (SP?) managed it. I sincerely hope it is reconstructed as faithfully as possible. I%26#39;m glad that%26#39;s the plan; it%26#39;s the only way the OH can remain a Watch Hill icon. I%26#39;ve always expected to hear of the %26#39;Great Ocean House Fire%26#39;, the place was deteriorating. Here%26#39;s a shot of the Ocean House I took during my last visit in April, 2005 for my mother%26#39;s 80th birthday.

  • Dining choices...

Hi, I%26#39;m visiting Feb.24th and 25th with my wife. We are trying to narrow down our dining choices and based on web reviews and friend%26#39;s recommendations we%26#39;ve come up with (in no particular order)the following..........

    Neath%26#39;s

    Moda

    XO/Ten Prime

    Big Fish

    Mill%26#39;s Tavern

I was looking for some feedback (or additions)here from the local experts. We%26#39;ll be staying at the Westin and will be going to the Bruins game on Saturday night. Also, any recommendations on a pre-game place would be a help too.

    Thanks.

    Dining choices...

Pre-game choices are easier. I assume you are talking about the Bruins game at the Dunkin Donuts center in Providence??? If so, plenty of places right around the corner from the Westin..Re Ra is one, the Union Station Brewery Place is another.

As for dinner, I would go the extra block up from the Westin to the infamous ';Federal Hill'; where every restaurant is excellent..I especially like Cassarino%26#39;s and Andino%26#39;s and The Old Canteen.

Let me know if you need any more help...

    Dining choices...

Tuff because they are excellent choices, I have been to all except for Moda (must be new, which doesn’t mean it is a bad thing)

XO, Ten, Prime and Big Fish are all owned by same restaurateur, all very different.

Prime is steak, Big Fish is as it’s name, Ten is steak and sushi very trendy.

As for location Neath’s, XO and Mills tavern are all in the same area Ten is not far from the general area The Big Fish is on Richmond Street off the beaten track.

My suggestion is look at the menus online this may help. Here is a web site with links

    www.inn-providence-ri.com/restaurants.shtml

For something casual pre game the Trinity Brew House is very close to the Dunk

    Enjoy

Thanks for all the help so far. Federal Hill has always intrigued me. I enjoy The North End have always heard that the Hill rivals, or even betters the North End.

I%26#39;m still torn though on my choices, but I do know, Ri-Ra and Trinity Brewing will be on the pre-game/post-game list. I%26#39;m a big Ri-Ra (Portland,ME/Burlington,VT/Providence) fan as well as a micro-brew fan. I%26#39;ve been to the Union St. Brewery before it was owned by John Harvards.

I like the sounds and looks of Moda, 10 Prime and Neath%26#39;s. The trendy places I enjoy, especially if they have a nice lounge to relax at before and after dinner.

    KJ -

Thanks for your advice on the Montreal forum -

Sounds like you have the pre/post game covered with Trinity.. can%26#39;t go wrong there.

But as far as dinner goes there are two directions you can go in -- 1) Federal Hill (90% Italian food, and yes, as good as the north end) or 2) The Trendy Spots.

If you go the Federal Hill route, I would imagine you want to get that Italian feeling so I would suggest:

    1) Camilles - a bit overpriced but as far as Federal Hill atmosphere goes it ranks right up there - they usually have a live singer belting out Sinatra tunes on the weekends

    2) Meditteraneo - might be the best all around restaurant on the Hill

    3) Andino%26#39;s - small, no frill, Sinatra playing for background music, etc... good solid, food - has more of a ';local'; feel

For the trendier spots, I would suggest:

    1) XO Cafe (on South Main street) - small but great food and great drinks - a bit pricey but worth it

    2) Ten Steak %26amp; Sushi (downtown in the Financial District - the city is small so you could walk there from the game) - similiarly, a bit pricey but tremendous steaks and Sushi. Don%26#39;t confuse this one with 10 Prime on Federal Hill though.

I would stay away from Big Fish - might as well be a chain - no soul to it. Mills Tavern is a great resturant but it is a tad expensive and feels like a bankers dining room - don%26#39;t get me wrong, it is beautiful, but it is all dark wood, etc... hope this helps

    KJ -

Almost forgot... regardless of which route you take re: dining, skip the dessert at the restaurant and head to either:

    1) Pastiche (in Depasqualle Sqaure in Federal Hill) - perfect if you end up eating on Federal Hill

    2) Elizabeth%26#39;s (on South Main)

Both are cool littel spots that your wife will undoubtedly be happy that you took her there for dessert/after dinner coffee type drinks

    Nice, nice work Jason. Thanks.

I love Andinos. The food is awesome and the prices are reasonable.

  • Newport Dining? St. Patty's Day??

We will be in Newport on St. Patty%26#39;s Day. Any suggestions on a couple of casual type restaurants? Any suggestions for Friday evening March 17th?

    Newport Dining? St. Patty's Day??

Mudville (Irish Barmaids), Aidans (irish food in a real pub setting. Both on/near the parade route...both packed on the 17th. Lots of pubs to pick from...these two have good food and are affordable....pay a little more but more selection at the Brick Alley.

    Newport Dining? St. Patty's Day??

The St. Patty%26#39;s Day parade is actually the weekend of the 10th in Newport - not sure if this changes your plans. Busker%26#39;s is good for Irish pub atmosphere. We always go to Sabina Doyle%26#39;s - great views, food and fun. However, I hear it may be under construction. The Red Parrot is also good. Try Scales and Shells if you are in the mood for seafood - but remember they only take cash.

    Family vacation (with pool)

We have two children (aged 4 and 6) are looking for a resonably priced destination where we can rent a villa.

We are looking for good weather, activities for the children, family friendly restaurants and things to do as a family.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

    Family vacation (with pool)

If you enjoy the beach, there are many rentals available in coastal southern RI (Narragansett, South Kingstown). You could try a site such as cyberrentals. There is a lot to do in the area-many beautiful beaches, playgrounds and in Summer there are a lot of festivals and activities such as outdoor concerts for children. You can visit historic Wickford village, take the ferry to Block Island, or visit Providence, all are close by. You might also enjoy Newport-there is a lot to see and do, and several of the accomodations there have pools, but it can be pricey in July/August. If you can visit in June or September, the weather is nice and the prices are lower. Good luck!

    one day in Providence.

We are staying in Boston for 5 days and wre thinking of going to Providence for the day. Is there much to do and see there. Many thanks

    one day in Providence.

Providence is a beautiful city with wonderful restaurants. Rhode Island School of Design has an outstanding art museum. There are walkways along the three rivers in the city that have many explanatory murals from the R.I. Historical Society that create an outdoor museum. Benefit Street with its preserved 18th and early 19th century homes is also fun to explore on foot. Visit the First Baptist Church in America built in 1775 and the John Brown House 1786 to see lovely Georgian architecture.

    one day in Providence.

Sticklegs, you don%26#39;t say when you%26#39;re planning your visit. If it%26#39;s during the summer, there is a thing on the river called Waterfires. It is beautiful. It takes place at night, and gets extremely crowded, so if you opt for this, plan ahead. Google Waterfires, Providence, RI for more info. Also, the stroll along the river in itself is very nice. Many upscale restaurants along the river as well. There is a place called Federal Hill in Providence that offers unbelievable Italian cuisine. The only problem there is choosing which restaurant!

    Newport/ Block Island

We will be heading back to PA from MA with a 14yo son and 12yo daughter the first week in July. We have 2-3 days and would like to find a nice place to stay in Newport at least for 1 night. Is it sensible to go to block island for 1-2 nights and where would you stay if you would go to Block island? Where should we stay in Newport? My husband and I stayed at The Jailhouse 13 years ago. Is it still ther and is it ok for kids? Any help would be appreciated.

    Newport/ Block Island

Block Island is very crowded and expensive for the fourth of July week. Several places will only rent for the week, most of which are probably booked by now. Newport will also be crowdwed, but will have many places to stay. I suggest the three nights in one plce or the other, less than that in BI isn%26#39;t enough.

    Have fun

    Victorian Ladies Inn

Just made a reservation here for our anniversary. Can anyone give me some feedback on the place such as location to waterfront, etc. Thanks.

    Victorian Ladies Inn

It is within walking distance of the city%26#39;s major beach (half mile or less), and also Bellevue Ave. shops, and the downtown waterfront area is less than a mile away.

It has a good reputation, is professionally managed, and appears to be busy in season.

Hope you find it is what you want.

    Victorian Ladies Inn

    Hi Teric:

My husband %26amp; I stayed at The Victorian Ladies Inn in July 2005 and absolutely loved it! It is within walking distance to the harbor area (less than a mile) and on the trolley line to the Cliff Walk. Everything is convenient from this inn.

SEE MY COMPLETE REVIEW on this forum dated 7/18/2005. ALSO, PLEASE SEE MY POST WITH 10 PICTURES of this inn: Get out of Newport Forums. Do a search: ';Victorian Ladies Inn, Newport'; ....posted under ';Luv2run'; dated 9-10-05.

You will not be disappointed ! If you like blues music, be sure to check out the Newport Blues Club. For great sandwiches, go 1/2 block down from the inn to deli/grocery. (Proprietors can tell you the name). Don%26#39;t miss The Marble House Mansion. It is gorgeous. I%26#39;ve mentioned other places in my above mentioned posts. Have fun!

  • Providence Local Transportation

Could anyone advise what the local bus service is like in Providence? We are staying at a B%26amp;B which has a bus stop right out front so we thought we would keep the car parked and take the local transportation into downtown Providence and other areas to sight see.

    Providence Local Transportation

Providence isn%26#39;t really that difficult to navigate, at least compared to Boston. However, the local transportation (RIPTA) as far as I know is totally safe. I%26#39;ve never taken it personally, but my friend has let her teenage son (now 20) take it often with never a problem.

    Providence Local Transportation

RIPTA is public very safe and good transportation. They usually run on time and cover a majority of the state. They stop at Kennedy Plaza in downtown Providence. From there you are a two to five minute walk to almost anything you want to see and visit. You will also find more than adequate parking downtown more so on the weekend for sure. RIPTA also runs the Providence to Newport Ferry which is definitely a must see in do when visiting the area. A very inexpensive and prety way to see Rhode Island and its glorious coastline. With over 400 miles of coast to explore it will keep you busy.

Lighthouse Inn at Gallilee - Looking good

There has been a lot of discussion about the Lighthouse Inn (also formerly known at the Dutch Inn). No one seemed to know if it was opened for business of not. I was in Galillee recently and noticed that it looked open so I stopped in. The hotel lobby was clean and remodeled. The staff was friendly as well as customer oriented. They explained that the hotel was reopened recently under new management and they were doing all that they could to bring back the fine reputation that hotel once had. They noted the the pool area had been remodeled and would be continuing to make improvements and upgrades to the guests rooms. There is also a new Steak restaurant adjacent to the hotel lobby which appeared to be clean and appealing.

While I can%26#39;t comment on a stay at this hotel yet, I won%26#39;t hesitate to stay there.

Lighthouse Inn at Gallilee - Looking good

This is much appreciated! I%26#39;ll have a look-see when I%26#39;m headed to BI this fall.

Lighthouse Inn at Gallilee - Looking good

I stayed here with my 12 year old daughter for a last minute getaway from CT for two nights last August. It was fine, nothing spectactular really, but it was clean. It has a great location which I really liked, and you can%26#39;t beat avialability on such short notice! I%26#39;d go again.

    summer vacation

I want to take my very young grand children to a beach with a boardwalk and rides. Can you give me some ideas???? Thanks so much.

    summer vacation

Watch Hill might be your best bet. Good beach and merry-go-round and historic village to walk around.

    summer vacation

I know this is not R I related but if you want the real boardwalk and beach try the New Jersey shore they have plenty of what you are looking for.....

Not much of a board walk but the misquamicutt (sp?) area has lots to do for kids.

Sand Hill Cove is a great kids beach,so is Narragansett. Check those two out.

    Mohegan Sun/Foxwoods Distances

How far are Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods from Newport? Looks like about 30 miles, but wasn%26#39;t sure of the traffic..

    Mohegan Sun/Foxwoods Distances

    it takes about 1 hour

    Mohegan Sun/Foxwoods Distances

Traffic wouldn%26#39;t be bad from Newport, especially the route you%26#39;ll end up taking. So I%26#39;ll also have to say 1:00 to 1:15 tops..

Fairfield Newport at Inn on the Harbor

We are plannig to stay two days in Newport on our way to Boston. Is the Fairfield Newport at Inn on the Harbor good place to stay? The palce doesn%26#39;t seems to have it%26#39;s own webpages so it%26#39;s hard to get good picture about it. Altough those two rewievs here are good.

We travel with two small children (2 years and 5 months). We want nice and clean place to stay which locatoin is central and it%26#39;s easy to get around. We are especially interested about the Clif walk. Is Fairfield Newport at Inn on the Harbor place for us?

Fairfield Newport at Inn on the Harbor

I believe this is a timeshare. It is about two block from the middle of downtown. Since you will use a strowler - all should be well.

Fairfield Newport at Inn on the Harbor

Fairfield is ok, but it is not very close to the Cliff Walk if that is your main interest. It is close to downtown shopping, restaurants etc. but if you want to stay closer to the Cliff walk (which is really only about 1.5 or 2 miles away) then you might try a B+B that allows children - maybe something like Victorian Ladies? that%26#39;s the closest one I can think of and it is also close to the shops on Bellevue Ave which are nice. If you do stay at the Fairfield beware of the promotions, I have heard that they try VERY hard to sell you one of their timeshare/condos and can be quite annoying about it.

  • Ideas for April visit??

    Hi,

Small group of us (16) coming to RI in late April to see a PawSox game. We%26#39;d like to make a weekend of it but need ideas of what else to do, where to stay, restaurant suggestions, etc. Would like to do all not too far from stadium. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

    Ideas for April visit??

Apologies in advance,Pawtucket (and correct me if I%26#39;m wrong), but I think you%26#39;re going to have to venture into Providence to really do much and to have flexibility with restaurants and accommodations.

    Check out:

    rimonthly.com

    http://www.providenceri.com/

    http://www.visitri.com/providence.html

    Ideas for April visit??

Downtown Providence is a convenient place to stay. From here you can walk to wonderful restaurants downtown, along the riverwalk and in Federal Hill. You can explore the history of the city on foot. Walking tours with a guide can be arranged if you desire. You may contact me for more details.

There aren%26#39;t very good hotel options right in Pawtucket. You might want to check out neighboring Attleboro, MA (Holiday Inn Express) or Lincoln, RI (Marriott Courtyard).

Kind of have to agree that there%26#39;s more to do in Providence than Pawtucket but you might want to check out the Slater Mill in Pawtucket, where the Industrial Revolution started.

The others gave some good suggestions for sites to see what%26#39;s going on in town when you arrive. I%26#39;d also check out www.waterfire.com to see if there%26#39;s a WaterFire in Providence that weekend. And be sure to take a stroll on Federal Hill in Providence - wherever you stop you%26#39;re guaranteed to get a good meal!

Have fun, McCoy is a great baseball park!

I鈥檝e been preoccupied with the Holidays so I missed this one but a bit more information from you as to the kind of group may help in directing you to the best choice for lodging and activities.

The group of 16 is it 8 couples or 16 wild and crazy guys, then the Comfort Inn in Pawtucket may be your best alternative.

Also are you looking at budget or a certain price range or do you want something special.

If it is couples you may want to try a Bed and Breakfast as an alternative that may have a nice common area to relax and get together before or after the game.

In addition to all the choices mentioned you could try Seekonk it is just is close as Providence or any of the other towns mentioned and there are a lot of choices.

You may not be able to walk to restaurants but you may save your self a few dollars.

In addition to all the activities mentioned you may have a preference on what you would like to see or do it would help to make a weekend since there is a variety of things to do.

There is a good neighbor hood restaurant in Pawtucket on Central Avenue not far from the stadium called the Hose Company it is in an old brick renovated firehouse good food reasonable prices and casual. Perfect for a pre or post game dinner. 401-722-7220

    Hope this helps

We too can not wait for Baseball season again.

There is a Comfort Inn right off Rt 95 with a pretty decent ';Ground Round'; restaurant attached. This will probably be your best bet for price and is 10 minutes from the Stadium. Federal Hill is our Italian section

With all due respect to Pawtucket..... there is no reason to spend anytime there (except to see the Paw Sox)while you are in RI. Plan on eating/staying in Providence as there are many terrifc restaurants and plenty of nightlife if you are interested... As far as hotels go, let me know your budget but some average priced ones are The Marriot, Holiday Inn (next to the civic center) and the Radisson.... if you have a few bucks to spend then it would be worth looking into the Westin... if you can narrow down what you are looking for re: dining I would be happy to give you my 2 cents

    J

I%26#39;d like to visit Providence overnight. I%26#39;d like to stay at a reasonable hotel that I could walk to things. Is there such a place? What about nightlife. I don%26#39;t require nightclubs per se, but a nice sports bar. I%26#39;ll be there for Cinco De Mayo so any suggestions would be welcome. Thank you.

I have stayed at Hotel Dolce Villa (right now the number one rated hotel) It is great! full kitchens 1 or 2 bedroom suites w/ fireplaces plenty of room and FREE PARKING. With a whole group that definitely helps. If your group is all friends and family you can get a few two bedroom suites and then only need one or two one bedroom suites. That will definitely cut costs with sharing suites rather than having 8 separate rooms. Great little Plaza and tons of things to walk to!!

I%26#39;m heading to Providence tomorrow night actually and staying at the Providence Marriott. However, in the past my husband and I have gone up for PawSox games too, and we%26#39;ve just headed a little further north up to North Attleboro to stay as well. Lots to do up that way too! However, I%26#39;m sure more nightlife is to be found in Providence

  • July Vacation

I am trying to make vacation plans for the family. We are looking at Rhode Island...Newport, etc. (6 adults and a 3 year old). I need to know is there a beach in newport for swimming. Any suggestions for a good place to stay...with a pool?

    July Vacation

Newport does have a few swimming beaches (1st and 2nd Beaches come to mind). Accessibiilty can be a problem (i.e. parking). If you don%26#39;t mind walking it should work out. RI has some other fabulous beaches with various levels of accessibility for out-of-towners - our favorite is East Beach in Charlestown, Block Island is a great day trip with great beaches, too. Narragansett Town Beach is great, too. Don%26#39;t kno wabout hotels, I am a local.

    July Vacation

If you want to stay in the heart of everything, there are a few condo associations on the wharf%26#39;s, with pools. I can%26#39;t think of their names of the top of my heads, we usually rent houses, but this website is pretty helpful for finding rentals....www.vrbo.com

if you want hotel rooms - hyatt has a great pool - very expensive in summer - but a nice facility.

Little Compton Vacation - October 2006

My wife, 4 year old son and I would like to come for vacation in the Little Compton area this fall. One of my fondest memories from my youth was a two week summer vacation in Little Compton in a large cottage on the cliffs that looked out to sea.

We belong to a condo vacation club so need to locate a seaside condo somewhere in the vicinity. Can you suggest any nice ones in Little Compton or relatively close by? We prefer one on the ocean with one or two bedrooms and a fireplace. Thank you for any suggestions!! David@SEIGuides.com

Little Compton Vacation - October 2006

I also spent time there in my youth and haven%26#39;t been in a few years but what you are requeting is, I believe, near impossible. There are NO resorts or time shares in that area. If I%26#39;m correct, then to this day Little Compton remains uncommercial and pure.

Newport should be you closest alternative but then you have lost what you wish to recreate.

    Getting to Block Island

What is the best way to get to Block Island from CT?

    Getting to Block Island

I believe it%26#39;s New London Ct. has a high speed ferry service. If not any Block Island Tourism home page will let you know how to get there. WARNING! Once you go there you%26#39;ll be hooked!! The 4th of July Parade is a HOOT! But anytime is great on Block Island. I am a regular traveler to the island. While residing in RI BI is the RI Bahammas! You can relax or party until your eyes burn, your choice. I hope this has been helpful for you. Any other questions feel free to email me @ imagoodmann@yahoo.com

  • Block Island for Memorial Day

My husband and I are considering going to Block Island for the Memorial Day weekend. Neither of us has never been and are wondering if this is a good time to go. We don%26#39;t have any children and like to go away to relax. Places we%26#39;ve loved in the past are North Conway, NH %26amp; Hyannis, MA. We%26#39;re hoping May is a better time to go to BI than in the summer when the peak season hits. Our biggest question is will it be crowded for this holiday. We%26#39;re also concerned about accomodations. It seems there are many bed %26amp; breakfasts. We tend to prefer nice hotels. Any tips??

    Thanks!!

    Block Island for Memorial Day

Well, the weather and crowds won%26#39;t matter if you prefer nice hotels with spacious comfortable rooms and dining on site, etc. Block Island is a charming place to visit and part of that charm is the bed %26amp; breakfast places to stay. There are no hotel chains on the island.

If you still wish to go, I believe Memorial Day is the weekend that most restaurants / shops begin to open for the season. I don%26#39;t think it would be overly crowded.

    Block Island for Memorial Day

All hotels on the island all very old the larger hotels are the Spring House and the National. Visit the Block Island Tourism page to further assist you in finding a place. As an earlier person wrote the B%26amp;B%26#39;s out there are many and very charming. I would look into the 1991 House as a choice. I went to the brunch they put out, WOW! Makes me hunger just thinking back to it! To bad you will not be able to swim in the cool Atlantic waters at that early time of season. It is most refreshing! I hope you enjoy.

    Surfing

Does anyone have any experience surfing at block island? I would imagine that there could be some decent waves.

    Yes?

    Surfing

Except for after storms, the wave action at BI is pretty tame. A lot more people sailboard than surf there. But boogie-boarding can be fun.

    Surfing

I don%26#39;t surf but I know that the waves are huge down by Mohegan bluffs. Unfortunately the bluffs erode more and more each year so it%26#39;s difficult to get down to the beach, although people manage to do it because it can be quite crowded during the day. If you go you may not want to go during peak times, however, I wouldn%26#39;t recommend going alone because the waves can be pretty rough at times.

I don%26#39;t think anywhere around BI shoals up enough to get a decent, distant enough break to surf in actually. However, Narragansett Town Beach, Point Judith Light, The Trestle in Matunuck are all good spots. I have not seen to many surfers out on Block Island.

    Motorcycles on the Island

We are currently planning a weekend trip to Block Island. We are coming with two other couples on our motorcycles. We are well behaved middle age bike riders! Are there any hotels or B %26amp; B%26#39;s that would be more receptive to having us? Can you recommend a place that is moderately priced?

    Motorcycles on the Island

I have never known BI to discriminate. As for moderate priced places to stay, hmmm. That could be tough out there. Check out Block Island tourism for more info.

block island day trip from newport

I will be staying in Newport, Labor Day weekend and wanted to know if anyone has taken the ferry to Block Island for a day trip. The 2006 rates are not posted and wanted to get feedback on if this would be worth exploring.

block island day trip from newport

Sorry I didn%26#39;t find this post sooner!

I%26#39;m a huge Block Island fan from way back, but regardless, here are its main attractions. You can base spending a full day there on whether it%26#39;d detract from what you plan to do in Newport or force you to cancel some of what you%26#39;re there for.

BI is most renowned for its expanses of unspoiled natural areas. The Nature Conversancy calls it ';One of the Ten Last Great Places in the Western Hemisphere.'; Much work has been done to preserve what man did not create; over 40% of the land is now protected from ';development.'; This means expanses of beach with no hotels or snack bars, fields and forests free of houses, etc. If you enjoy hiking (or just walking), BI is a wonderful place for it. Birders flock there, had to say it lol, because it%26#39;s a major migration stopover and hosts dozens of species that in some cases are rarely seen on the mainland.

You can rent either a bicycle or a moped to get around that much faster. Nearly every cab driver on the island also is a credentialed guide, so for not much money you could be escorted all over the place on your own private tour. That%26#39;d be an effective way to take in all the sights (lighthouses, Mohegan Bluffs, Great Salt Pond, etc) within a brief time frame.

While the island doesn%26#39;t lack for restaurants or shopping, particularly in the Old Harbor area where the Newport ferry lands, that alone shouldn%26#39;t motivate you to make an excursion. I think Newport has BI outclassed in both categories.

    My vote is to definitely fit Block Island in on your vacation - but only if you%26#39;ve had your fill of Newport%26#39;s waterfront and ';cottages.';

block island day trip from newport

Silly Willy, don%26#39;t be Silly! BI is a great place to do just that, explore. Great if you%26#39;re a people watcher or a bird watcher. Either way you%26#39;ll enjoy the relaxed ocean ride. I would recommend the high speed ferry only because the larger slower ferry seems to roll along at a slower pace. It is a bit more expensive but I feel well worth the more comfortable trip. Bring your camera. Pack a small day pack with towel, water and sunscreen, money for food and you should be set. If I can be of any further assistance feel free to contact me @ imagoodmann@yahoo.com

Yes, I am always silly but love life. Does the high speed ferry leave Newport Harbor? I checkout the ferry from the Harbor and it looks like it takes about 2 hours. I keep reading about the ferry from another location that we would have to drive too. Have you ever stayed at the Mill Street Inn or Attwater Inn? I have both places reserved until friends from NH can make a trip down and review.

    Better for Romantic Dinner

I was wondering which would be better for a romantic dinner. Canfield House or Tucker%26#39;s Bistro? We are getting away for one night in Newport since we didn%26#39;t get the opportunity to take a honeymoon yet. I want to pick the right place with atmosphere and food. Thanks.

    Better for Romantic Dinner

Tuckers is nice and the food is very good but if you want a really romantic dinner I would recommend Castlehill. It is in a great location on Ocean Drive and the service and food are wonderful.

    Better for Romantic Dinner

I second Castle Hill and also would very highly recommend The Chanler. It%26#39;s situated at the end of the Cliff Walk, overlooking first beach. It%26#39;s a beautiful high-end boutique hotel with great food and service.

    I probably would choose Tuckers. Castle Hill is quite nice but, this time of year with the sun setting so early.... I would reccomend it for lunch....That way you can ';sea'; what you are paying for FYI Castle Hill has gone ';prixe fix (sp?)';

I don%26#39;t think Tuckers or the Canfield house has the best food on the island.

    Couple of other suggestions:

Upstairs at 22 bowen - expensive for steaks - but certainly will feel special.

Although the spiced pear is probably the the best food on the island - it%26#39;s not for everyones palate - very upscale taste for sure.

I love the west deck. Food is awesome - ask for a nice table for two - it will not disappoint.

While tuckers has a romantic atmosphere - save that for the hotel - and really enjoy your meal at west deck!

So, where did you eat, and how was it?

  • are there any Newport lodgings with contemporary flair?

Touring the mansions is something I%26#39;m looking forward to, but I%26#39;d prefer to spend this particular stay somewhere with stylish 21st century decor -- but not a ';cookie cutter'; hotel chain. My %26#39;net surfing tonight has yet to yield anything promising, so I%26#39;m turning to you all in the hopes that you can give me some leads for an anticipated 2-3 day visit in a couple of weeks (price range up to $300/night).

    Gratefully ~ CC

are there any Newport lodgings with contemporary flair?

The Chanler Hotel is ';over-the-top'; contemporary. Some love it, others think it is overdone. Service can be a bit shaky, they are still trying to get their act together after changing managment last year, but it is contemporary. Can be overpriced unless you find a promotional deal.

The Mill St. Inn is another inn with contemporary decore. It%26#39;s less expensive than the Chanler, not the same level of services, but it works for a lot of people, especially because it is within walking distance of the downtown area.

are there any Newport lodgings with contemporary flair?

    Thanks, LocalObserver, for your comments!

    I need information...

Anyone who can give me information on the best way to commute in Rhode Island? specifically in Middletown?

1.How much is the standard rate for taxi cabs?

2.What are the best places to go? cool bars at night and places to visit during the day.

Any other basic info will help...

    I need information...

';Commute'; makes it sound like you%26#39;re moving there for work and/or school. If I called that right, the Website for Rhode Island%26#39;s mass transit authority is:

    http://www.ripta.com

There you%26#39;ll find all the info on buses, ';trolleys,'; ferries, etc.

I%26#39;ll leave the word on area attractions and partying hotspots to the locals :-)

    I need information...

    Thank you. Greatly appreciated.

I just want to know as to the best form of transpo in R.I for transfer from one place to another, since I will not be driving. :)

Hi I would just like to know if there is a Filipino Community in R.I?

Boston to Providence weekday traffic & airport info

We are planning a visit to Boston for the Clemson/BC football game in September. Looking at possibly flying into Providence instead of Boston to avoid some traffic but will probably stay the weekend in Boston and leave out on Monday. How would traffic likely be on a Monday morning Boston to Providence? Is PVD airport convenient? Would this be a good alternative to BOS? Thanks for any advice.

Boston to Providence weekday traffic %26amp; airport info

PVD is about 60 miles from Boston (the airport is actually in Warwick, south of Providence)

Traffic between Boston %26amp; Providence is heavy on any weekday morning and there is no preferred route. A morning commute can take as much as 2.0+ hours depending how one hits it.

BUT- there is commuter rail service between Boston - Providence ($12 RT) that takes just over an hour. RIPTA bus service is available from PVD to downtown ($1.25) and the MBTA transit system in Boston connects from the commuter line at South Station to anywhere you want to go in Boston ($1.50).

If a car is a necessity, a better alternative to PVD is MHT (Manchester, NH) only 50 mi from Boston, straighter roads through less dense population. Traffic toward Manchester is not as heavy on a morning commute as toward Providence. There is no commuter rail service to Manchester.

If you don%26#39;t need a car, I would definitely stay with BOS. The MBTA serves the airport and makes getting around metro Boston very hassle free.

Thanks for the information. We want to have a car to do some sightseeing on our own. We changed hotel plans for Sunday night so that we would be close to PVD on Monday morning and avoid the drive.

  • Need a great vacation place for a week!

Our daughter is participating in the 2006 World Scholar-Athlete Games on the campus of Rhode Island University during the week of June 24-July 2, 2006. Our family would like to vacation in the area while our daughter competes that week. We are looking for a great vacation home/condo/rental for the week. We do not know the area and would love to talk to someone that has an interest in renting to us. We are from Green Bay, WI, yes, home of the Green Bay Packers! Please contact me at dsteavpack@ashwaubenon.k12.wi.us. I am an administrator at a large high school in the Green Bay area.

    Thank you for your interest!

    Sincerely,

    Dave Steavpack

    Dave,

It is illegal for homeowners to rent for a week at a time, try oceanstaterentals.com or vrbo.com, we%26#39;ve always had luck at vrbo for short term rentals (some people still do short term rentals although illegal). Good luck and have fun!

Vbro is great - also go to craigslist.com - click on providence and post for newport in housing needed.

You will be sure to get a response from someone on craigs list quickly - it never fails - i spend hours a week on that site.

It is NOT illegal to rent by the week in most communities in RI, except in the city of Newport. The other two towns on Aquidneck Island, Middletown and Portsmouth, have many legal weekly rentals, most of which can be found online. In addition, many of the real estae agencies in the city have rental agents who can find you weekly rentals in the larger and better quality category.

You may also want to consider a rental in the South Kingston area around URI. There are many beach properties available for the week, again they can be found either online or by contacting local real estate offices.

    Good luck.

FYI, the major problem you will find with weekly rentals and your travel dates is that most are on a Sat. to Fri. basis. In addition to the Games, the Tall Ships and the Women%26#39;s PGA Golf tournement will be taking place in Newport at the end of June. I strongly advise that you make reservations somewhere ASAP as the publicity for those events is just starting to hit the press. You will find that Newport is a considerable distance from URI and will be much pricier than lodging in ';South County'; as Washington County is generally called.

For lodging in South County you can check out www.southcountyri.com.
