One Day in Rhode Island

Okay so I accept that one day is nowhere near long enough to explore RI fully however one day is all I%26#39;ve got. We will be staying in the Crowne Plaza Warwick-Providence. We have a full day - what recommendations do you have? We have a car so can travel around a bit. Thanks for your help

To answer your question, it%26#39;s important to know: when will you be here, day of week et. Do you want to visit museums, sightsee on land or water, learn history?

Hi Old Explorer

We%26#39;ll be in RI towards the end of June - mid week. I don%26#39;t really fancy visiting museums - want to explore more outdoors, coastal areas, parks etc. If we could get out on the water even better!

How about taking a trip on the providence newport ferry?

You will get a nice trip in the bay and then be able to walk around beautiful newport either shopping or along the cliff walk.

According to the web site, ferry reservations are recommended.

I would recommend that or renting some bikes in providence and take a ride down the beautiful east bay bike path that is about 17 miles long, mostly along the water, and ends in historic bristol.

the Newport Ferry is a good idea. You can park for free at the ferry dock. Providence is also an interesting and walkable city. Park at the Roger Williams National Memorial Park . Go inside for short visit to see 4 min film and talk to ranger. If you are interested in a 6K walk to see historic highlights, the ranger can give you printed directions. Or get Providence map walk up Smith St. and take a tour of the State House, then walk toward Downcity and walk along Waterplace Park and the Riverwalk to Steeple St. At the corner of Steeple and N. Main you can visit First Baptist Church in America. Walk up to Benefit St. and explore ';the mile of history';. Walk north on Benefit( the numbers will get lower) to 150 Benefit, the Old Colony House. Walk through this historic building, seeing where the first colony(R.I.) declared its independence from Great Britain(plaque on wall) then out N.Main St. entrance to find your car across the street. If you do walk in morning and ferry in afternoon with dinner in Newport, you would have a great outdoor day.
