Ocean House Hotel

The Ocean House Hotel has been closed for years!!! why is it then that tripadvisor has it as one of the top rated hotels in Rhode Island ..... hhhhmmm? Tripadvisor seems a bit outdated if I dont say so myself!!

Ocean House Hotel

This place is totally closed its been closed for some time why tripadvisor has it onone of there best hotels is quite amusing. The veracity of tripadvisor is obviously in question is this is a fine example of it.

Ocean House Hotel

Yes, you%26#39;re correct in that the Ocean House is currently closed. Last year, when it was announced that the property had been sold and was slated to be developed with condominiums, a local group stepped in, and it looks like that the future of the Ocean House is restoration.

What I%26#39;ve done when I%26#39;ve noticed that a local business has closed/changed names is notify TripAdvisor. I%26#39;m sure it%26#39;s a challenge to keep up with changes to the amount of information they have to keep.

Not sure where you%26#39;re getting your info, but the OH in Watch Hill RI has been accepting reservations since %26#39;99, and has had a limited number of rooms available up until last Labour Day, when, indeed, the future of the place was in doubt. In addition to a fairly good restaurant with awesome views, there%26#39;s a great terrace (open this year, at least it was 6/23) to enjoy a cocktail while taking in Fishers Island Sound and the ocean breezes.

I live 1.5 miles from the place, so I have had the good fortune of enjoying the place in recent summers...pity most of it is closed this year....

Swabjockey,

That%26#39;s interesting that you found the OH terrace open; maybe it was for some occasion or short period? When you call the OH number, they have a message that it%26#39;s ';....closed for extensive renovations.'; Then they direct you to the chamber of commerce to find something else. In any case, according to the local paper just yesterday, it looks like the future of the OH will be a tear-down and re-creation. Too bad they couldn%26#39;t save it.

Updated information is that it is slated for domolition but is to be rebuilt in 2008 as an exact replica with all of the new amenities sounds like it should be great!! But until then it is closed so why does tripadvisor have it listed as a valid spot to stay over nite?

As of January 1, 2006, Watch Hill%26#39;s Ocean House Hotel was a massive pile of demolition debris waiting to be hauled away by contractors. However, the local consortuim that purchased the property plans a 2007 or 2008 opening for a completely replicated Ocean House with exterior architecture that faithfully reflects the iconic structure it replaces. Sadly, demolition of the original building, parts of which dated to the late-1860%26#39;s, was necessary. Never insulated, it had always been open only for a 10-week season from late June until Memorial Day. Furthermore, installation of plumbing in the 1920%26#39;s was done at expense of the building%26#39;s structural integrity, and Rhode Island%26#39;s very strict fire codes meant that for many years, the building%26#39;s upper floors were closed to hotel patrons. These limitations will all be remedied when Ocean House reopens as a year-round hotel destination. Stay tuned!

Thanks for posting, BellaWesterly. I have a lot of fond memories of the Ocean House. I grew up on Hubbard St. in Westerly (where my folks still live) and along with my sister worked there for a couple years in the 70%26#39;s when the Brankert%26#39;s (SP?) managed it. I sincerely hope it is reconstructed as faithfully as possible. I%26#39;m glad that%26#39;s the plan; it%26#39;s the only way the OH can remain a Watch Hill icon. I%26#39;ve always expected to hear of the %26#39;Great Ocean House Fire%26#39;, the place was deteriorating. Here%26#39;s a shot of the Ocean House I took during my last visit in April, 2005 for my mother%26#39;s 80th birthday.
