beaches and hiking

What is the best area to stay in, if I want to be within walking distance to a nice beach (5 mimnute walk) and also to hiking tails? I am not familiar with what side of the island to stay on - east or west? Also, where can I view the best sunsets? Any help would be appreciated. :)

This depends on whether you are going to rent a house or stay at a B%26amp;B or hotel. A lot of the B%26amp;B%26#39;s and hotels are located in and around Old Harbor which makes your options for a 5 minute walk to a nice beach a little limited. I personally favor Mansion Beach which is located about 1/2 way up Corn Neck Road. Mansion Beach is also near the Clayhead trails. If you really like to walk...you can reach Mansion Beach from Old Harbor by starting out behind the Surf Hotel and following the shoreline north. You%26#39;ll walk through Crescent (State) Beach and Scotch Beach before getting to Mansion. Mansion Beach is popular even though it has no facilities. If you are looking for a nice beach that is a little more secluded, I would recommend the beach at the bottom of Mohegans Bluffs (south side of island). Again there is hiking nearby as well (Greenaway Trails cover much of the island).

I believe many of the beaches facing the west side of the island are rockier and tend to be harder to access. You may want to try www.blockisland.com for more info as well. Hope this helped.
