Economical place to stay in or near Newport?

The DH and I would like to spend our first anniversary in Newport this July without breaking the bank. Any suggestions - we don%26#39;t need to stay right in Newport, but near enough to go out there at night.

Thanks!

I would suggest Middletown. My husband and I are staying at the Countyard by Marriott and it is minutes outside of Newport.

I would concur with the Middletown advice. First Beach is actually in Middletown, as are many casual, beachfront eateries (Flo%26#39;s Clam Shack, a locals favourite, comes to mind).

You can go into Newport for the day, and retreat to First Beach for the evening. After the Breakers and Rough Point, you%26#39;ll not need to see many more cottage/mansions, I would think. ';Downtown'; Newport has some grat places as well to eat and drink, and I don%26#39;t think a cab (or even walking!) to Middletown would be a huge expense.

Its a beautiful place all round!

Have fun!

If you can find a place to stay near First Beach (Easton%26#39;s Beach), you can indeed walk to Newport up Memorial Blvd, certainly at least to the Cliff Walk and Bellevue Ave.

But the Courtyard and other cheaper chain hotels are located on West Main Rd (Rt 114) %26amp; Coddington Hwy, which are not walking distance to anything but the north end neighborhoods of Newport along traffic jammed roads. If you don%26#39;t have a car, you could taxi or even take the RIPTA bus ($1.25) into town from this area.

Sorry, RIPTA is $1.50 now.
