Block island in one day

Just booked the 11:30 ferry for Thurs. Wanted to know if the mopeds were worth it--We are a family of 4 with teens 16 %26amp; 19. What about horseback riding--or dinner suggestions. We will leave on the 10 pm ferry back

Thanks!

I wouldn%26#39;t recommend renting mopeds. I%26#39;ve been going to BI for over 30 years. They are universally hated by everyone on the Island and are horribly expensive. The island is small and you can walk all through the downtown area. If you are more actively inclined, you can rent bicycles to see the rest of the island. Car rental is also an option for a much lower cost than renting the hated mopeds. Don%26#39;t eat at Harborside Restaurant , Aldo%26#39;s, or the Springhouse. None of them are good for different reasons. Just about anywhere you eat besides these places is okay but there is no ';gourmet dining'; on the island, despite any claims you may hear about. There are also some restaurants located in New Harbor. I would type the name but this message board thinks I%26#39;m being profane (I%26#39;m not) so I can%26#39;t give you the name of the restaurant I%26#39;m thinking about. You can easily catch a cab from Old Harbor to New Harbor. Also, there is a shuttle that runs from Ballard%26#39;s (Old Harbor) to the New Harbor.

You have me so curious of what the name of that restaurant is! Can you give a ';rhymes with...'; or some other hint? :)

If you%26#39;re able, I%26#39;d recommend bicycles to see the island. You really get a better feel for the island that way. Most of the island is easy to maneuver about on a bike.

As per a request, the full name of the restaurant is Dead Eye D_____ick%26#39;s. (Added a blank spot since it still won%26#39;t accept the full name of D_____!) Yesterday, I simply referred to it as D______%26#39;s and this forum wouldn%26#39;t accept it! Also, I think the Manisses or 1661 Inn offer some of the best meals on the Island.

I am very familiar with the island and would be more than happy to answer any questions people have. I%26#39;ve stayed in a variety of B%26amp;Bs through the years. Now I reside in CA and don%26#39;t get out to BI that often. Next year, my family will be staying at the Island Manor Timeshare. Not the greatest place but it has what we need.

Back to BI in one day, you can walk from Old Harbor to New Harbor if you can handle an easy hike of about 2 miles. Also, the best places on BI can%26#39;t be seen from the road. You must stroll down the beaches, hike into Rodman%26#39;s Hollow, etc. to really get the feel. And, oh yes, spend time with as many locals as possible.

Where would you recommend a single mature woman stay? I%26#39;m from New York, and I don%26#39;t want to stay in town. I want somewhere quiet, but that does not cost my first born.

I will be going sometime in September, and plan on spending bet. 2-3 nights there and seeing the island by foot and bike. Is that too much time? I%26#39;d appreciate your input.

The restaurant he is referring too, along with SMuggler%26#39;s next door aren%26#39;t even open, never mind recommending them.

Aldo%26#39;s is fine and the best on the Island for Italian...huge portions of the real thing. Try Mohegan Cafe for atmosphere and good fish. Deck of the Kittens for afternoon (only) MExican...trully outstanding and cheap. Others with good food ShArkey%26#39;s, Spring House for the view, the Oar for reasonable good food, Beachead.

Places to stay that are within walking distance of town...Payne%26#39;s, or even better try the Blueberry Inn for a great hidden B%26amp;B...you%26#39;ll need your bike but its only a five minute ride down hill into new harbor and reasonable...it is spotless, beautiful, silent and very, very safe. Another good bet is Rose Hill up behind the Atlantic...also very nice near Old Harbor. If view is what you are after...book Sullivan House across from the beach....old, historic and the view is to die for...service there is horrible though.

Above all...relax and drink in the Fall...Sept is the best month out here.

Well, it%26#39;s been a few years since I%26#39;ve been to the Island. I had no idea that D%26#39;s wasn%26#39;t open. As far as places to stay are concerned, the Old Town Inn (if that%26#39;s even open) is nice altho%26#39; a bit far from town. 2-3 days to see the island is a nice amount of time and I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll be bored. I love the ocean, the beaches, and the Island itself and can easily amuse myself for that amount of time. Most of my time spent on the island was when I was single and I can honestly say it is a pretty safe place. I can%26#39;t remember all of the places I%26#39;ve stayed on the Island and don%26#39;t want to recommend anything specific in case they, too, are closed. I will say that the 1661 Inn is quite nice (but perhaps a bit pricey) and I think that stays open all year. Another idea is for you to peruse the web to see what hotels there are. As long as you stay off the ';main drag'; you probably won%26#39;t feel like you are in town. As far as Aldo%26#39;s is concerned, I still wouldn%26#39;t recommend them! I%26#39;ve been coming to this island for 30+ years and have seen that place change from a hole in the wall to what it is today. (I have also seen the Spring House go from $25 a night with a full breakfast and dinner and free transportation to and from the ferry and to and from the State Beach to what it is today. Anyone reading this may not even believe me when I say that this is where I used to stay and that%26#39;s what I used to pay.) Anyway, my memory will be refreshed when I return next year with my family and stay for a week. I%26#39;ll remember all of the names of the hotels and restaurants that, unfortunately, are drawing a blank right now. Sorry I%26#39;m not quite the wealth of specific information that you are looking for.
