I%26#39;m staying in a timeshare this time that has a full kitchen and I want to take advantage of it. Maybe I haven%26#39;t been up early enough but I%26#39;ve never seen the lobstermen unpack their catch altho I%26#39;ve seen hundreds of empty traps on hundred of boats. Would someone please tell me where and at what time I should go with cash in hand? Also, where can I go to get oysters and clams from the fishermen? Thanks!
lobster and oysters/clams bought off the boat: where?
Go to the fish store behind the Landings and Bowens 22 on Bowens Pier .
lobster and oysters/clams bought off the boat: where?
Thanks, Allure, but I%26#39;m really looking for a recommendation of a pier where I can deal directly with the fishermen. You know, cut out the middle man? Thanks.
I don%26#39;t know where to get them in Newport but I can tell you where to go in Narragansett.
Head down 108 and turn down the Galilee escape road, take it to the end and right to your left, you can walk along the docks and buy direct from the lobster boats.
Most of the lobstermen aren%26#39;t interested in ';cutting out the middleman';, since the middleman is their year-round customer. By the time most of them get to their moorings or docks they%26#39;ve already unloaded their catch to a wholesaler. The large off-shore vessels often are met at the docks by trucks ready to take their haul to Boston on NYC.
You may find a local part-time lobsterman who will sell you from the boat, but that%26#39;s hit or miss.
The suggestion to go to Aquidneck Lobster at the end of Bowen%26#39;s Wharf is your best bet for guaranteed fresh and reasonably priced. They%26#39;ll even cook them for you if you ask, for an additional fee.
Thank you very much, SheilaMc and LocalObserver. I shall ';snooze around'; the docks very early in the a.m. If I am not succesful, off we go to the place you all recommend! It%26#39;s my understanding that you can%26#39;t get to the docks there without going on the retailer%26#39;s property. Thanks again!
Just pay a bit more..order them from Long Warf Seafood or Aquidneck lobster and they will steam them for you for free. It%26#39;s a great deal...and they stay hot for hours!
Aquidneck at the end of Bowen%26#39;s Wharf has the best lobster. A great place to stop on the way home as well, to bring a small peice of Newport home with you to throw on the grill.
Thank you all for your answers to my query. I shall do exactly as you all advise.!
I just posted this in another thread:
';I posted an inquiry a few weeks ago about where to buy lobster right off the boats. Responders were kind but were unable to answer the question. Well, I%26#39;m here in Newport now and I was able to find EXACTLY what I was looking for. It took about 5 minutes. I%26#39;ll answer your question...I hope that it%26#39;s not too late. State Pier 9 is at the end of Long Wharf. Just go right in to the area and make a bee-line for the docks on the left. Just about every day you will find someone selling lobster right off the boats and every day you%26#39;ll find all the traps that your husband could possible want to see. Most days you%26#39;ll find two boats that are owned by Rich. His son and friends will be there working, too, preparing bait for the next day. They are lovely people, eager to share their knowledge and experiences with you and their lobster prices are GREAT. I%26#39;m going to take some pix and post them here when I get home.';
I know that you Newport folks know exactly where I%26#39;m talking about, right?
Was the price any different than if you went to Aquidneck Lobster or Long Wharf Seafood?
