any pros and/or cons for spending a weekend in early November?
Newport in November?
The weather is still nice, the crowds are far less, the hotels are less expensive and you still have all that Newport has to offer. The only draw back is if you have your heart set on sun bathing. My husband and I enjoy Newport in all seasons but especially enjoy it during the fall. November is a great time to visit!!!
Newport in November?
Autumn is a great time to visit Newport. No crowds, weather can be nice - just bring a warm coat for evenings. Most everything is open. Best things is you can get into the great restuarants!
First of all it somewhat depends on your age . There are some young music clubs open on the weekends . The town and it%26#39;s B%26amp;B%26#39;s are good for a romantic Quiet getaway . And the Newport Blues Cafe will have entertainment on the weekend as well as a few midweek shows . It will be great for photo buffs . The Red Parrot restaurant will be open as well as places in Jamestown . The Coast Guard House Restaurant in nearby Naraganset will be nice that time of year .
So now let me play the devils advocate . There are few events ( none ? ) like Taste of Newport ,or the Jazz Festival ,taking place . Some restaurants are closed or only open on the weekends . The bars that are open close at 12:45 am . Anything on the water is a no-show ; from swimming to taking the Rum Runner Boat . Many of the gift shops are closed . There are no baseball games or tennis matches . The grounds of the Mansions may be too cold to enjoy as well as ANY outside drinking or dining . The Newport Grand will only have entertainment on Saturday night - and it may be Kareoke ! I don%26#39;t think the train tours run in November ?
Check out gonewport.com and see what is happening for that weekend in Newport .
This is a laid back town IN SEASON . Hard to picture staying two nights in NOVEMBER unless I had a game plan .
Newport should sue the state to allow a 3 or 4 am closing for it%26#39;s bar service . It should spend some money on developing real attractions for the area such as a big name showroom at the casino . And promote special weekends off season such as Valentine%26#39;s day specials , or New Year%26#39;s Eve town wide ( hard to do when the places close at 12:45 am ! ) .
my husband and I (we are 29 %26amp; 30 yrs old) are going to Newport on Oct 28th and staying for 3 nights. We did this 2 years ago. We are getting tickets to the Belcourt Castle Halloween party. The last time we went we stayed in a B%26amp;B in the historic district and went to the Halloween party at the Elks club and then afterward, went to the blues club - great time. during the day you can go to one of the vineyars, do the Cliffwalk, I think the sailing is still open and we are going to try to go over to Providence. There is also the large Fort, the Mansions and good places to eat. We want to have fun, but also relax. There seems to be plenty to do in the ';off'; season.
I still encourage Newport during fall. If you want a romantic weekend together to get away from the crowds and noise it is a great place to go. Not all 30 somethings, like me want an all night party scene. It is a question of prefrence, not age. If you are going to enjoy your mate, then it is a good choice. I am glad that Newport has retained a quite existence. Something, I am sure the locals appreciate. If you are looking for a continuous party scene, Newport is not the place. That kind of action can be enjoyed in NYC and the like.
2firenze ,
I agree that enjoying a later ( 3am-4am in nyc or 4am-6am Atl.cty ) is a personal preference and not an age thing . My wife and I are 50ish and wish Newport gave us a CHOICE of staying out or calling it an early nite , as we enjoy both . ) . In my previous post I meant that most of the music clubs in Newport are geared towards the students of U of R I . Although The Asterix has nice jazz/standards music Sunday night and The Newport Blues club has a mixed age crowd with excellent Blues and rock %26amp; roll . And some of the other activities in Newport are geared towards older people . But just walking around relaxing , as well as other activities enjoyed by the over 30 crowd , is a bit limited during the cold weather .
Also the fact that Newport stops Liquor Service at 12:45 am hurts the town in it%26#39;s ability to provide a year round resort atmosphere . It needs this to promote indoor activity and events during the colder months . People are not going to flood the town to see the lighting of the Newport Turkey . Yet they might get a crowd for a Thanksgiving weekend Oldies Music Festval if the venues could stay open a bit longer . Most people in NY and NJ are used to having entertainment and food service available for extended hours . At least they should allow the hotel bars to serve their customers til 3am . After all this is their ';home away from home'; . They won%26#39;t be driving , or out on the streets making noise . Note that there are few music clubs geared towards the over 30 crowd in Newport , even in season , although Newport Hosts the Jazz and Folk Festivals . No artists want to play Newport unless they get a %26#39;weekday with guarentee%26#39; . It seems Newport doesn%26#39;t need this diversity in season ( so far - It seems that this past season , the chamber of commerce couldn%26#39;t even raise enough money for a fourth of July Fireworks celebration .) But the B%26amp;B and hotels operate at 25% of adjusted income levels during the rest of the year . Even the Folk and Jazz festivals are often held in sweltering sun instead of being allowed to have this wholesome ,booze free entertainment extend past dusk . My wife and I walked back to the Vanderbilt from the Asterix one Sunday night after the music went off at 12:30 am . We were starving . The only thing we could find open near Thames St. was an empty Pizza Parlor . One of the livliest restaurant/bars in Newport , The Red Parrot ,stops serving at 10PM on weekends . Places can%26#39;t stay open if they can%26#39;t serve liquore . This turns many potential visitors off to spending time in Newport off season , when the daytime is a bit cold for sightseeing and exploring .I get the feeling that for the past several seasons Newport has been resting on it%26#39;s reputation .
Understood allure but again, it is a matter of preference. All the things that you feel need attention to draw ';crowds'; are the things that some people love about the off season in Newport. You can get a seat in your favorite restaurant without waiting on line, you can stroll the streets and enjoy the quiet and still enjoy the same beauty. You are advocating something to generate crowds to generate revenue but the fact that this does not exist in Newport is what draws many of the people that go in the off season. My husband and I stay in Castle Hill and pay 1000/night for a room during the summer. We pay 250/night for the same room during the fall/winter. Although Newport has it%26#39;s appeal during the summer, we enjoy the off season allot more because we do not have to fight the crowds, deal with the parking in town (at $20 a pop) and get into all our favorite restaurants without having to make reservations or wait. We are form NYC and deal with the crowds, the lines and very hectic careers all week long. Newport is like a breath of fresh air. We travel extensively and are glad we are able enjoy this jewel, relatively close to home, that has not given into all he trappings of a money generating, crowed, party scene. If this is what some travelers are looking for then it is a great place to go. If not then it is not.
2fierze ,
Your points are well taken !
It is just that the lack of revenue seems to be putting the resort at risk . Certain parts of town are becoming a bit run down . ( Mid Thames ) . And The chamber of comerce is operating on a very thin budget . It is Newport%26#39;s ';Dirty little secret'; that there is a ghetto hidden from the crowds (Watch tower section) .
And my complaint is that having 5 or 6 college bars in town while the bars / restaurants for the older crowd with disposable income have the earliest closings in the country . I don%26#39;t see why a little loosening up would hurt the little town feel of Newport . A nitelife zone could be put inplace around the Newport Grand area . This area could certainly use an influx of funds . Or having the Asterix have a Standards band F/S/S till 2am doesn%26#39;t seem like it would do any damage .
And actually this thread began with a previous question by vacaguy asking about the ';action'; in Newport during early Nov. While my wife and I enjoy riding a bicycle around the town , I just didn%26#39;t equate this with ';action'; . I would have thought that meant things like '; Taste of Newport'; , The Grande Casino , The Blues Cafe%26#39; , etc.
Sorry. I was responding to pros/cons during November. No mention re: ';action.'; Anyway, we can agree to disagree. Re: ';Ghetto,'; poor people have rights too. I would not consider it a ';secret.'; The best places in the world have ';ghettos.'; Your points are valid. My point is that there are different stroke for different folks. Late night drinking is not a ';Newport'; activity. If this is what is being sought, Newport is not the place. If you want a romantic getaway it is. That is all.
I was not using the word %26#39;ghetto%26#39; in a derogatory manner .
';A ghetto is an area where people from a specific racial or ethnic background or united in a given culture or religion live as a group, voluntarily or involuntarily, in milder or stricter seclusion.';... from Wiki-pedia.com .
Yes all areas have ghettos . But in Places like AC and NYC , the residents are afforded equal rights in employment and eduacation . In fact programs are in place to help them rise above the ghetto . And funds through operations such as the Casino A.C.Redevelopement fund work to bring better conditions to the ghetto areas . The Newport Cof C has not done anything to help the disadvantaged area in Newport .
But the rights of those people in the Newport ghetto are being denied . They are shut out of the employment in Newport . And very few of the tax dollars , and hardly any of the huge profits made by the resort town businesses , go towards helping the disadvantaged area .
And my wife and I have been together for 31+ years . We had a very romantic evenig at Harrah%26#39;s Casino on Sept.4th . Part of that included dancing and having snifters of Grand Marnier at Harrah%26#39;s Eden Lounge till about 1:45 am . I still don%26#39;t think having cocktail lounges open till at least 2am interferes with the concept of a romantic getaway . IMHO . I%26#39;m not talking about large places with punk rock bands and mosh pits . I%26#39;m talking places with a 23 y.o. and over door policy ,and a sq. foot restriction .
