Labor day weekend in block island

Hello,

I want to surprise my wife to a romantic labor day weekend. I have been to block before for a day visit but she%26#39;s never been there. We both like the beach, can anyone recommend a hotel or bed and breakfast in block island that%26#39;s on/near the beach and away from the crowds. I am hoping to keep the budget below $100 per night. Any idea on what the water temperature is this time of the year. Thanks for your recomendation.

Cheers

In all honesty, you%26#39;re probably SOL to have waited this late to plan something. Odds are that every hotel and decent B %26amp; B is fully booked. But hold out hope and try the Spring House Hotel, Old Town Inn (NOT near beaches, but nice) or Sullivan House B %26amp; B (for starters.) Also realize that many places, one of them my favorite (Surf Hotel), require a three-night stay now ';because they can.';

I think you have a trade-off to consider: quality or money. Few inns with room rates under $150-200 a night are well thought of by those who%26#39;ve stayed in them. (And sometimes the pricier places get hated on too!) Splurge and cross your fingers that there%26#39;s a room at the 1661 Inn, Manisses Hotel, or Atlantic Inn. Or do the opposite and hope that the sketchy reputations of Ballard%26#39;s, the Gothic Inn, the Seacrest, the National Hotel, and Water Street Inn are unearned. And scour the TA reviews before going on the reservations quest.

If I%26#39;m sadly proven right that there%26#39;s ';no room at the inn,'; you could still make a day of it. The high-speed ferry service from New London (right next to the Amtrak station) has a package-deal thing going: sail over in the morning or at noontime, return the same night, enjoy a nice dinner. The down side of that ferry is that you can%26#39;t bring your vehicle on board, not that there%26#39;s likely to be room on the Pt Judith ferry now either.

I hate to be a pessimist, but Block Island is getting more and more like those snooty islands off Massachusetts%26#39; south coast. To set up any kind of vacation, you have to put aside a large chunk of change and have your accommodations guaranteed months ahead of time. Either that, or do what I do and visit during a ';shoulder season'; (Memorial Day to Independence Day, Labor Day to Columbus Day.) The crowds have disappeared and the weather%26#39;s still great.
