I will be going to Newport for a couple days in August. Want to do the mansion tour that includes 3 of the mansion (Breakers, Marble House, Elms). How much time does it take to tour each of these? What other things would you recommend doing in Newport (besides the Cliff Walk)?
Any recommended restaurants? Are there any good, inexpensive restaurants that serve lobster (like in Maine)?
Thanks so much.
Mansions
Depending on time of day , day of week etc. you have to allow anywheres from 15 min to 2hours waiting time at the mansions . The tour at the Breakers takes about 75 minutes . The tour at Marble house is a self guided tour with a headset . Can take anywheres from an hour to to an hour and 45 minutes . I haven%26#39;t done the Elms . Three is a lot in one day ! Also times don%26#39;t include the time to tour the grounds and the gift shops .
There are few inexpensive restaurants in Newport . You might have to go a bit out of town . The Quohog on Thames Street is good and not outrageous in price .
For other things to do go to goneport.com . Also stop by the visitors center by the train stop .
There is a short afternoon train ride that is resonable and entertaining . The Rum Runner Boat ride is fun but for 21 and over - mostly couples . There is always good music at the Newport Blues Cafe on Thames . The Tennis Hall of fame is interesting , goes well with the mansion tours . You can get a steamed lobster to go at the Apidquick ( sp?) Seafood store on Bowens Wharf .
Mansions
You should be able to do those in a day if there are not long lines. I went the 2cnd week of July %26amp; my longest wait was 15 minutes-most of the mansions did not have any wait. We actually did 4 (Breakers,Elms,Marble House %26amp; Rosecliff) in the 1 day. The audio tours you can make longer by listening to many extras-we listened to a few of the extras which I enjoyed. However I also had a 10 %26amp; 12 yr old so we skipped the majority of extras.
Since I%26#39;m not from the area I don%26#39;t know if there is normally a wait or not so good luck in that area. The 3 you selected were pretty houses so you should enjoy them.
I meant to say the last RumRunner ride of the day , the cocktail run , is for couples .
