I am thinking of taking a day trip from Boston to visit those mansions in Newport, RI. I am sure this can be done in a day if I leave early from Boston. But what if I want to add a visit for the Waterfire festival in Providence in the trip? Is it doable? How long is a drive from Boston to Providence and from Providence to Newport on a typical weekend day?
Newport/Providence Day Trip from Boston
I%26#39;m pretty sure you can do this if you are ambitious. I would be really tired after a full day like this but it can totally be done.
All of these times depend on where in boston you are staying but I would say generally, (also depending on how fast you drive) it takes 1 - 1.5 hours between boston and providence and 45-1hour between providence and newport.
There is a high speed ferry that operates between providence and newport. if you arent into driving a ton, you might consider that as an option for going back and forth from newport to providence.

Thanks for a quick reply ..
About the Providence-Newport ferry, where can I leave my car in Providence and is traveling around Newport convenient without a car?
Hi there:
I have never been on this ferry but the RIPTA web site suggests that there is convenient land transportation around newport that specifically says you can go from that port to the mansions on their bus.
See this web site, maybe another traveller here can add some personal experience but in my opinion, to add a beautiful ferry ride to a day otherwise spent in a car would be fantastic!

There are parking garages downtown providence right next to kennedy plaza, it might be great to have your car parked there for later so you arent looking for parking before waterfire.
have fun!
There is lots of free parking right at the ferry dock
Really in providence? Cool! Good to know, thanks!
