My husband and I are planning a vacation to the New England area this fall (probably in early October). We will dragging our baby along who will be 6 months at the time. Give it to me straight....are the mansions do-able with a baby? Can we bring a stroller along? Or cart her in a carrier of some sort?
Thanks!
Traveling with a Baby to see the Mansions
Crying babies are a definite NO . Strollers are a definite NO . Carrying a baby around will be difficult up and down the stairs , althoung most have an elevator . If you try this I would suggest Marblehead which is a self guided ( Headset ) tour . This way you can take time outs as you need them and use the elevator without rushing .
Traveling with a Baby to see the Mansions
Strollers weren%26#39;t allowed in the mansions (you can probally park outside) but I don%26#39;t see why you can%26#39;t take your baby. My children are older now but I took them everywhere as babies. I carried a 2 yr on a behind the scenes tour at Biltmore in NC which was a much larger tour then any of the Newport Mansions. If the baby is screaming at the top of his/her lungs the whole tour that would be a problem but other then that I don%26#39;t see any problem with that. I think it%26#39;s all in what you%26#39;ll be comfortable with. There are some stairs in the mansions but nothing hard. You can also drive to each of the mansions so there%26#39;s really not a need for walking or a stroller (parking is free). There are grounds to walk around so that%26#39;s an easy feeding time to keep the little one happy. I say go for it.
This is two months after the question was posed, but I figure others may be interested in the topic and open this thread. We%26#39;ve been to Newport many times with and without the kids. The mansions do not allow strollers, but a babe in arms or baby bjorn is fine. See the mansion you%26#39;re most interested in first, then in descending order of interest if you%26#39;re trying to squeeze more than two into a day. We took our 18-month-old five years ago and he was great through Elms and Marble House, then melted down halfway through the Breakers. I took him out, my husband continued the tour then I went on the next tour while my husband played with our toddler. The grounds and gardens are nice for kids so it gives one parent something to do while the other is inside.
Dont be afraid to bring small children the baby bjorn is a great suggestion and will give you some extra freedom and afford you the opportunity to walk around comfortably and view the mansions. Enjoy !!!!!
