Harbour B%26amp;B'S
I%26#39;ve never been to Bar Harbor so I might be completely off base, sorry if so.
Narragansett is a great family friendly town. There are plenty of places to put in if you have your own kayaks or there are two rental agencies on the Narrow River. The watershed in the Chafee Wildlife Preserve is beautiful or if you get adventurous a lot of people enjoy ocean kayaking. The beaches are great, good currents for body surfing or boarding. Lots of places to bike. Just south of Narragansett you have Ninegret Park and the Yagoo National Forest (not to mention another 40 miles of beaches.) And of course, the ferries to Block Island leave Narragansett so you have a whole island to bike/hike/boat /swim/explore. While you are in the harbor (Galalie) you could check out the deep sea fishing boats, sight seeing boats or whale watching boats. If you wanted to try the newly renovated Cliff Walk over in Newport it is only 20 min. by car. On the way you could stop at the trails around Beavertail Lighthouse on Jamestown Island.
Plenty of places to eat in the area. Not a lot of fast food in Narragansett but the traditional ones are in nearby Wakefield. (Good time to wean the kids off the big chains.)The age of the kids and the size of the family makes a big difference in selecting a B%26amp;B. (and how long you want to stay.) Best Kept Secret and Heartwell Cottage take little kids. Other B%26amp;Bs have age restrictions. As always, read the reviews and ask lots of questions. A weekly self-catered apt. is an option too.
