Romanic place for dinner in Newport?

My husband and I are celebrating our 2 year anniversary and I would like to eat somewhere with nice atmosphere and yummy food. Has to have a balanced menu, I don%26#39;t eat anything from the ocean, but my husband loves fish!

Asterix on Thames .

Romanic place for dinner in Newport?

Asterix is nice, but not what I would call romantic; somewhat busy and lots of conversation etc.

Bouchard%26#39;s, just a block or two north on Thames St. is what I%26#39;d call romantic, and the food is outstanding! Ditto for Castle Hill, though it%26#39;s about a ten minute ride out of town on the Ocean Drive. The view is worth it, and the food and service are as good as it gets.

Another in-town romantic place is the White Horse Tavern, downstairs (upstairs is a more casual bistro menu/atmosphere).

All three are pricey, but for a wedding anniversary dinner I assume you aren%26#39;t looking for Chili%26#39;s pricing.

Go with LocalObserver%26#39;s recommendations; they%26#39;re right on the mark.

I agree with Local Observer as well. My favorite is Castle Hill for its location. Very romantic. White Horse is wonderful as well as are the others mentioned! Asterics is nice and fun but if it is romance you are after go with Castle Hill or White Horse Tavern.

The Rhumb Line.....hidden, small and historically quaint, piano, excellent food and attentive staff that will make you feel welcome,.....then off by cab to Castle Hill, grab an after dinner drink at the bar and wander outside to an Adirondack chair as the music plays in the distance, and the lights of the bridges mesh with the overhead stars.

Castle Hill for dinner will run you $250....the Rhumb Line $125, White Horse $175 with wine.

Thanks for these suggestions. We did indeed eat at Asterix (def a fun atmosphere, but NOT romantic), White Horse Tavern (very nice and romantic), and Castle Hill (we did brunch and bellini%26#39;s which were fabulous). We also ate at Bowens 22. Decent steaks, don%26#39;t bother with the Lobster. Can%26#39;t wait to go back!

So glad you reported back on your experiences; I wish more people did that. That lets us know we%26#39;re giving you good (or bad) information. Happy to know you had a good time and will be coming back.

While I%26#39;m sure the presentation , service and ';look-at-me%26#39;'; price tag at Bowen%26#39;s said ';fine dining'; , the decent steaks and don%26#39;t bother lobster say this is a restaurant pretending to be fine dining .

Very good , even great food can be had in a variety of dining experiences . I have heard from many others that they share my opinion that the food at Bowens 22 has gone downhill and they are now selling the packaging and reputation .

G***Goose Vodka serves the same type of customer . Fancy Bottle , Nice box , Upscale advertising , Look-at-me price . Yet it has soundly lost every consumer blind taste test against Smirminoff , Svedka , and Viking Fford , all which cost about a third . Makes me laugh when I hear someone trying to be suave and ordering Goose , especially in a Cosmo or Screwdriver where you can%26#39;t tell the difference anyway . But some people just feel better buying a name . Somehow makes them feel more important .

While I enjoy %26#39;fine dining%26#39; , I go to a restaurant to EAT . The quality of the food is the primary concern . If I%26#39;m not hungry , I don%26#39;t go to a restaurant for amusement . Yes ,if I can find good food and the occassion calls for it , ';fine'; dining is great . And I expect to pay a premium for the fancy touches . But it is cheating oneself to automatically assume that more casual places like Red Parrot or Chopmist Charlies have inferior food because they have casual ( think Smirminoff%26#39;s bottle ! ) atmospheres . Also equally silly in my book is to tout a place just because it%26#39;s packaging and prices are upscale .

BTW to Stuck in NYC , I was at first somewhat suprised to hear you describe Asterix as more fun than romantic . Then I thought back and realized the only two times my wife and I had been there for dinner were on Sunday nights well after 9PM. There were only a couple other tables taken , and we got the same booth both times . Lights were down low for the band that played standards like Misty and Satin Doll . We even had room to get up and do a little cheek to cheek with our after dinner cocktails . So this goes to emphasize my point that diferent times and days can make for a different perception . Glad you had a good time !
